Why 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin's Final Moments Should Be Televised
Big Hollywood ^ | March 12, 2014 | James Delingpole

Posted on 03/13/2014 9:49:36 PM PDT by This Just In

Steve Irwin had one of the weirdest deaths imaginable: stung multiple times in the heart by a stingray which had probably mistaken him for a tiger shark. His final words, we now know from his cameraman, Justin Lyons, were: "I'm dying."

Should the video footage of Steve Irwin's tragic death be published?

Didn't we used to call these things "snuff films?"

There are a lot of people who loved Steve Irwin’s programs, and I can appreciate his talent, but you’re exactly right. It seemed odd to me that Mr. Irwin would talk about respecting the wild kingdom and yet he would do quite the opposite. Rather than observing animals in their natural habitat, he would disturb them.

I would not air this, I would not watch this.

That people are even considering it is testament to how far we have fallen.

I’ll assume a bunch of FReeper’s haven’t seen it.

Time for a little “know your enemy” lesson.

The question is, what is the public interest in watching someone die?

If Mr. Irwin did not state explicitly that he wanted the video to be aired in the media, it's the family's decision.

I can't find a reference right at the moment, but at the time he died, there were quotes in the media suggesting that he had said that if he was ever killed on camera, he did want the footage to be aired.

It's his wife's decision, legally, and she's made it. It also seems unlikely the footage exists anymore. It was supposedly destroyed.

it is the evil within most people that compels them...and they usually don’t know it

I don't think we're talking about Irwin anymore. He was killed by a fish. The fish had no evil intent.

I see no social value in giving in to the base desires of others who wish to see a film of someone dying.

Rather than observing animals in their natural habitat, he would disturb them.

Yes, but to be fair, he was more of a neighbor than a visitor in their habitat. IIRC his home was a habitat. I don't believe I ever saw him mistreating or abusing these animals. He had respect for their abilities and their life.

The only creatures harmed during the filming of his movie were human.

Here is how I would answer the question.

If Steve had accidentally skewered a sting ray with a spear, do you think Steve would want it in the movie ?

I always thought the dood had solid steel testicles... or a loose screw, not sure which, exactly.

That being said, anyone who need more than a verbal explanation of what happened seems a little (or a lot) twisted to me. There are lots of things that ARE on video that I choose to not view for what I consider solid and personal reasons. Mainly, it's just gore at that point and I tend to not enjoy watching people suffer and die, regardless of the way it happens. Hell, I even have trouble watching those dumb videos on TV of skateboarders smashing their nuts all the time. I don't know how anyone could even have a desire to watch a guy get stabbed in the heart and die... sickening
