New Israeli Lab Seeks to Punch a Hole in Spacetime, Literally
Haaretz ^ | March 14, 2014 | do Efrati

Imagine that something is happening before your eyes, but you can’t see it — not because you have eye trouble or because it’s a microscopic event, but because of something like Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. Two years ago, researchers from Cornell University made that fantasy come true, on a tiny scale. They not only hid the existence of a brief event — the movement of a light ray from one point to another — but also the fact that it had been hidden.

One of the lead researchers on that study, Moti Friedman, is now setting up his own physics lab at Bar-Ilan University and looking for students. He seems unlikely to have trouble finding them. The study he published in the leading journal “Nature” in January 2012 roused great interest in the scientific community, while also setting the popular imagination on fire — at least among fans of physics and science fiction. Friedman, 35, managed to manipulate light to create a “hole in time” that hid the ray’s movement from point to point, a phenomenon known as time cloaking. Events taking place within this hole can’t be sensed in any way.

"When we do spatial cloaking, we cause the light to circumvent an object instead of striking it,” he said. “But that isn’t enough. You also have to put everything back as it was to create the cloaking ... It’s the same thing with time. When I open a ‘hole’ in time, I push part of the light forward and part of the light backward in time, and then close the hole,” he explained.

Now, in his new lab, he hopes to increase the duration of the hole by a factor of 10,000.

“Events taking place within this hole can’t be sensed in any way.”

Sounds like the Veterans Administration.

Interesting. However, the potential for abuse far outweighs any good likely to come of it.

Maybe that's why no one can find that 777

Maybe it has already been applied. (how would you know?)

If you can move forward and backward in space, why can't you in time?

What I don't understand about sci-fi stories, is that the Earth rotates and orbits the Sun, etc., so if someone moves in time they won't necessarily be on Earth anymore. So if someone invented a time machine and moved a person into the past or future, they may very well reappear in empty outer space.

In the meantime, the scientists in the physics lab at the University of Palestine are still perfecting the idiot proof suicide vest that won’t go off while it’s being put on.

It’s been well documented that people cannot see what they do not have an idea of — even when it happens directly in front of (or above) them.

Have we learned anything from our societies experiments with lava lamps. Did you read a wrinkles in time. If you are invisible and you fall in the forest will you make a sound?

Who’s motto is Think?

What is unseen can’t be seen.

I’d love to go back in time to take care of certain things. But then, every experience, every action, every idea, everything that has ever happened in my life has made me the person I am today, living the life I do today. The same for you and everything in your life.

Well, that would leave several girls (as young as age 9) widowed....
but it does sound like it may have some very positive results in the larger picture, yes.

one wonders....if eliminating just a few of the very very very very very baddest, worst people in history....would have substantially improved the world and the lives of millions of people?

In all seriousness, I have to wonder if that would work. The problem is not just that they were bad, but that the social circumstances were around where they could rise to power. Remove the person, the circumstances are still there, and maybe someone else worse fills the gap. Imagine if, instead of Hitler, we got Hitler-Prime, who was just as evil but just sane enough to press-gang all those Jewish scientists instead of driving them out of Europe to America.

I don’t think that your question will ever be answered, but it’s fascinating to think about.

your comment is exactly what I’ve wondered for years....thanks.

still, it seems maybe worth the risk of trying (once Israel finishes its time-travel technology)

I wonder if they were running a little test when that 777 disappeared?

I have to respectfully disagree. To paraphrase Spider Robinson, we can only hope that a culture with the intelligence to develop time travel would also have the wisdom not to use it. (Although, based in my geekly background, I suspect that any mathematical theory of time travel that could result in a practical device would also suggest how tolerant time is to modification, and the consequences thereof.)

“If you can move forward and backward in space, why can’t you in time?”

Here is a fascinating article by Cosmologist Paul Davies about time.

Excerpts from That Mysterious Flow by Paul Davies:

To be perfectly honest, neither scientists or philosophers really know what time is or why it exists.

Our senses tell us that time flows: namely, that the past is fixed, the future undetermined, and reality lived in the present. Yet various physical and philosophical arguments suggest otherwise.

The passage of time is probably an illusion. Consciousness may involve thermodynamic or quantum processes that lend the impression of living moment by moment.

Time is an extra dimension akin (but not identical) to space. Mathematically, (time) is a one-dimensional space, usually assumed to be continuous, although it may be quantized into discrete chronons, like frames of a movie.
