Too much inequality and too few natural resources could leave the West vulnerable to a Roman Empire-style fall

Navigate to the Previous Story in this Section TECHHere's How NASA Thinks Society Will CollapseToo much inequality and too few natural resources could leave the West vulnerable to a Roman Empire-style fall.

Few think Western civilization is on the brink of collapse—but it's also doubtful the Romans and Mesopotamians saw their own demise coming either.

If we're to avoid their fate, we'll need policies to reduce economic inequality and preserve natural resources, according to a NASA-funded study that looked at the collapses of previous societies.

"Two important features seem to appear across societies that have collapsed," reads the study. "The stretching of resources due to the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity and the economic stratification of society into Elites and Masses."

I suppose they have to use NASA for something considering they don’t do anything in space anymore.

Muslim outreach and propping up global warming, and now pushing liberal social policies (ie marxist “justice”/”inequality” causes).

Inequality exists because people and the work they do are NOT EQUAL. They live in different places and so wages and lifestyles are different in different places. Different jobs, more dangerous, more specialized, requiring more skill and ability, require more risk, pay differently than those anyone can do.

Who made them the arbiters of what is a correct salary for all people, much less one single person? Why accept the premise? Who made them the decider of what is too little, or too much, for someone’s job? This is socialism. The market decides what the right salaries are. Supply and demand of jobs and talent determine it.

Is it perfect? Of course not. No system we have for anything is perfect. To demand perfection is idiotic when they allow and accept and excuse imperfection in other systems they like, such as communism, marxism, socialism and when rich liberals use the system to their advantage. It is however a FAIRER - their favorite word - system than any of the above mentioned ones. It is the one system that has the best ability to reward those that achieve and excel, and encourages those that want to earn more, it gives them the ability not to be stuck in the same job with little or no hope of advancement in career or salary - think socialism/communism here - where they pigeonholed people into jobs and they would have that job until the day they died, very little chances for real advancement and only small cola-type raises if they got any at all.
Liberals are so myopically stupid.

“Shouldn’t NASA just explore space and STFU?”

What else they going to do? Make Muslims feel empowered or something?

NASA: Nothing About Space Anymore

This is what happens when a society allows females to take control of it. Think 'emasculation' and raising boys to be girls. 0bama was raised by a feminist single mother and a transgender, cross-dressing nanny and NASA now reflects that.

When we gave women the right to vote we did so ignoring thousands of years of social evolution. Male and Female roles are based upon survival needs. Too many of those needs are being ignored.

>Collapse can be avoided, and population can reach a steady state at the maximum carrying capacity, if the rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level<

I’ll agree with that

This is funny because it reminds me of hubby going off on a school teacher the other day when she was trying to tell us that Singapore Math is so wonderful and will help the US to be better at math. Hubby asked her about other countries and their space programs. He asked them how many have been to the moon or even landed something on the moon or another planet successfully. She stared at him like he was from another planet. He continued to go off on how great some persons of some ethnicities are at math and how they think in pictures. Just don’t climb aboard anything they build though.

Demographics is destiny.

Rome became a victim of its own success. The original Roman peoples that built the Republic and Early Empire became a minority in their own country as more and more non-Romans moved to Rome to enjoy the benefits of Roman civilization. The new majority just did not have what it takes to maintain the high civilization there. Same thing happened to Egypt, India, and Detroit.

Here's How NASA Thinks Society Will Collapse

Who asked them?
NASA. National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

What does that have to do with Aeronautics?
What does that have to do with Space?
Clearly, this particular bureaucracy has long exceeded its useful lifespan, and is desperately aggressively continuing to maintain its budget, its size and its national usefulness. To say nothing of its rapacious pathological need for constant expansion.

First Global climate, now the "collapse of Society?

Bureaucracies ALWAYS expands is reach to maintain an illusion of usefulness. As a concept, not a new idea of a parasitic cancer on society.

The short version : Bureaucracies expand to increase their power and influence, long after its reason for existing has disappeared or shrunk to insignificance.

A somewhat longer classic version :

Benjamin Franklin on Bureaucracies

LOL!

Even "oversight" entities themselves, morph into permanent, ever expanding bureaucracies!

NASA DESPERATELY NEEDS TO SHRINK DRASTICALLY, BE REPLACED OR DISAPPEAR!

I have never seen any evidence the later empire was less populous than in the time of Augustus or Marcus Aurelius. Or that the “barbarian” tribes across the borders were any more numerous.

For a host of reasons there were fewer men willing or able to fight to defend the empire. In fact, there are historians who claim that the “fall of the empire” was as much a series of revolutions by the inhabitants as it was invasion by outsiders.

In any case, it is obvious there were few willing to fight for what had become an oppressive system. Most of them discovered the hard way that life became much harder for them after the empire fell, but by then it was too late.

Next we will be reading how NASA purchased 20,000 semi-automatic weapons and 10 million rounds of ammunition.

The Roman fall came more generally when Julius Caesar consolidated all power in Rome. His adopted son, Caesar Augustus, finished the job of consolidating power into the Imperium.

That was, of course, when the Republic fell, but the Empire lasted another 500 or 1500 years, depending on how you figure it.

The Republic, BTW, was not murdered. It committed suicide. The last 100 years of its history it was ruled by aristocratic warlords who used the resources of the State to wage war against each other for control of the State.

The later Republic resembles an empire run by Mafia families more than anything else.

You have that correct. The Eastern Roman Empire lasted for another 1,000 years because they had a long string of good heads of state. The Western Empire had a long string of incompetents.

Kill yourself lest you get killed living?

too few resources because of government encroachment and traitors want to be leaving our sea lanes for barbarians to eradicate at will life on Earth as we know it.

Obviously Nasa chimes in for the usual kool aid poachers.

It's gone far beyond that. The entire government foundation is riddled with cracks at every level...It's caused by evil and mentally ill who've for whatever reasons are now in charge, making the decisions and calling the shots...

Hard to believe this happened to the once united and once greatest country on earth. No joke...
