NASA-funded study: The way to save Western civilization from collapse is communism
The Daily Caller ^ | 19 Mar 2014 | Michael Bastasch

If the United States wants to avoid falling like the Roman Empire, it must avoid “overconsumption” and distribute resources equally, according to a study funded by NASA.

“The fall of the Roman Empire, and the equally (if not more) advanced Han, Mauryan, and Gupta Empires, as well as so many advanced Mesopotamian Empires, are all testimony to the fact that advanced, sophisticated, complex, and creative civilizations can be both fragile and impermanent,” reads the NASA-funded report published in the Ecological Economics journal.

“Two important features seem to appear across societies that have collapsed,” the study adds. “The stretching of resources due to the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity and the economic stratification of society into Elites and Masses.”

The NASA study uses a Human And Nature DYnamical (HANDY) formula “to provide a general framework that allows carrying out ‘thought experiments’ for the phenomenon of collapse and to test changes that would avoid it.” In other words, the model only takes into account general characteristics of fallen civilizations, and not the specifics.

What did the study find? That collapse is hard to avoid in unequal societies as “[e]lites grow and consume too much, resulting in a famine among Commoners that eventually causes the collapse of society.”

Limits on resources harm the working class, while the wealthy are largely insulated from the problem, meaning resources continue to be used without regard to the cost to society. For example, “an increase in vehicle fuel efficiency technology tends to enable increased per capita vehicle miles driven, heavier cars, and higher average speeds, which then negate the gains from the increased fuel-efficiency.”

First, why is NASA wasting our money doing such a BS study?...I hardly see this as part of their mission.

Second, the idiot(s) doing this study haven't looked much at recent history where communism has always failed economically and quickly becomes a totalitarian state..examples Cuba and North Korea.

Not long ago I had a discussion with my father in law. He trotted out the old tired lib line about how more people have died in the name of religion and blah blah barf. I simply couldn’t take it anymore. I told him that more people have died at the hands if godless regimes just in the last century than ever before in human history, and cited the numbers. He didn’t have much to say after that.

The next real, true conservative President needs to gut NASA and get rid of all the political idiots and get back to basic space research.

Frankly this should happen with every agency. Back to basics or get rid of it and stop wasting our tax dollars on crap “studies” and producing propaganda (brought to you by The Ad Council).

Every person at NASA who is not employed there for the specific purpose of space sciences or direct support thereof should be fired including the director.

Name me one Communist nation who has put man on the moon even once. Name me even one Communist nations who's technologies of space science directly benefited the citizens of that nation. The United States once had a great space program because we are a free nation and because of the heroic efforts of a free people. Last but not least lets not forget the many secretive FAILURES of Communist nations space programs.

Why is the Obama Administration being allowed to use even NASA to further Obama's Communists Agenda as yet another tax payer funded Obama Propaganda Agency?

I agree and if this report, coming from NASA, isn't an exaple of "overconsumption" I don't know what is.

We should start by defunding NASA...NOW!

Well, just look around the world and see how successful communist countries are. There is the rich and progressive North Korea, Venezuela is a close second and don’t overlook Vietnam....who are these idiots and why is NASA funding them???

Actually, if there are a majority of russian speakers
on the ISS, it will be declared Russian territory to
protect them from capitalist discrimination.
They will be glad to give any non russian speakers
a lift home.

"completely defunded and dissolved as a government agency."

The cancer of bureaucracy and mediocrity has metastasized to the point where it's hard to see any other alternative...

Because that is how socialism propagates,
your children are already being indoctrinated,
your government has already been subverted
and every instrment of government has socialists
guiding the construction of a further socialist state.

Joe McCarthy was right after all.

I am 75, I was there at the time, from Wisconsin even, and I have maintaained since the "army-McCarthy hearings" that he was right...it is proven over and over...The Obama administration looks like a page out of Saul Alinski's book. It is frightening to witness what that man has done to destroy so much of our country.

NASA is a perfect example of a government bureaucracy who’s time is long past. Like any government bureaucracy though, it lives on as a shell of it’s former self wasting millions in the process.

as a contractor, I trimmed out a wood ceiling with steel I beams. they paid $1000 per gallon for paint that supposedly stopped radiant heat transfer. designed by NASA.

Certainly segments of NASA have, if they ever had any usefulness to begin with. The environmental alarmists are making a mockery out of the organization and should have been expelled from it a long time ago for corruption and for embarrassing the rest of NASA. JPL, JSC, KSC, and a few others are still vitally important to the future of our nation. If funding were diverted from Hansen’s clan to them we might actually get somewhere.

"If the United States wants to avoid falling like the Roman Empire, it must avoid “overconsumption” and distribute resources equally, according to a study funded by NASA."

I had to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

I kept looking in the article for evidence this wasn't the real NASA.

Some acronym that was made up that was NOT the agency that put a man on the moon.

Nope, it's our NASA all right.

WTF are they DOING with our tax dollars putting out garbage like this?

If I wanted a "lecture" about socialism and the environment, I'd look up EPA on the web. Or tune to some Al Gore speech. Maybe read a Greenpeace leaflet.

NASA has no business whatsoever wasting a single dollar on such dreck.

NASA is not a monolithic organization. There are multiple centers, each with different missions and objectives. Some entire centers need to be shut down in my opinion, I agree, but others are still very important.

Fun fact, the Siding Spring survey in Australia was put on the financial chopping block around the same time they happened to discover a comet that was initially a threat to impact Mars at an astonishing 57 km/sec, releasing approximately a billion megatons of energy. Instead of viewing this as a wake-up call that objects like that one can come out of the Oort cloud and strike inner solar system planets with barely more than a year's warning, the Siding Spring survey was given the axe while global warming alarmism continues to suck more and more cash. The end result is that we have less coverage now of the southern celestial sphere and objects can go undiscovered for longer periods of time giving us less warning if any at all.

For example, C/2014 E2 Jacques was just discovered last week at magnitude 11. With a proper modern systematic survey such a comet should have been found well before now when it was still only magnitude 16+. Wouldn't it be nice if we could shut down funding Hansen's alarmist pals at the Goddard Institute and divert those funds to JPL's Near-Earth Object Program so that we could have our own southern hemisphere survey of the sky to look for potential threats to our planet? Or launch more space telescopes to complement the NEOWISE mission? Some at NASA are doing very important work, and they could do more if we could shut down the NASA centers that are making an embarrassment out of the rest of NASA.
