Nairobi (AFP) - Kenya's parliament has passed a bill allowing men to marry as many women as they want, prompting a furious backlash from female lawmakers who stormed out, reports said Friday.
The bill, which amended existing marriage legislation, was passed late on Thursday to formalise customary law about marrying more than one person.
The proposed bill had initially given a wife the right to veto the husband's choice, but male members of parliament overcame party divisions to push through a text that dropped this clause.
"When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way, and a third wife... this is Africa," MP Junet Mohammed told the house, according to Nairobi's Capital FM.

In the villages, each wife has her hut, the husband his own. We’ve had the wives in polygamous marriages express their sympathy for western wives in monogamous marriages.
“We feel sorry for you because you have to put up with him ALL the time. With us, we can just tell him to go to another wife.”
Not saying that I agree with them, but different cultural perspectives are always interesting.
Now that the “opinion leaders” in US and nearly all of Western civilization have embraced legalized homosexual “marriage”, the push to legalize polygamy cannot be far behind. After that (if Western civilization still survives) it will be a race between marrying pet animals (not necessarily bestiality) and legalized incest.
The old “slippery slope” is looking more and more like one of those “I-dare-you” 150 foot fall water slides.
Well ... I do understand that there are “cultural differences” - but in our case, we have to ask, “Where did our cultural standard come from?” And in that case most people know that it came from what God said about creation and “man and woman” - and also it additionally comes from New Testament pronouncements on marriage (both of which come from the Word of God).
SO ... what makes this standard better than all others? Very simply, it comes from God the Father, Jesus the Messiah of Israel and the Holy Spirit (the Triune God) who created us and all things which were made.
That makes it “absolutely authoritative” the way we look it it (”we” being the ones who recognize the Triune God and that He exists and that He made everything).
Good. Now the wookie is free to do it without 0b0z0's consent.

By bringing up cultural differences, I did not mean to imply that “if it is their culture, then it is OK.” I merely meant to show that different cultures look at situations quite differently.
