AWS is a geek’s dream platform. I have several micro instances running dinky little Linux servers I use for file servers and a few applications. Along with Glacier, Amazon’s going to make a killing with the micro-transaction crowds. It’s just pennies a month to backup your (encrypted) data to the Amazon cloud.

I’m moving to the “boondocks” in a month and will lose my ability to host my LAMP server from home. I’ll have to look into this.

The concept of window isn’t going to go away anytime soon. And a brisk graphical bandwidth is going to matter.

The replacement for the PC will be the PC.

It might be Linux, running Windowy things via the AmazonNet (as an example).

But won’t the desktop computer with real processing power be unnecessary...just a barebones machine with about as much processing power as your cellphone or ipad.

Modem/routers would have to possess some of the abilities of small PCs or at least a “streambox” like Apple TV or Roku. Anything capable of running a web browser should be able to reach web-based storage and apps.

IBM was smart to sell out to Lenovo when they could.

I know of 3 Fortune 500 companies using Amazon cloud services to host their line of business systems. Seems to work well.

I run a quasi-lamp stack (I use Mongo over MySQL and a lightweight web server over Apache), but I chose RackSpace over Amazon. It was my conclusion that if all you want is a virtual Linux-based network, and don't need much in the way of tools and support, RackSpace is preferable since it doesn't ever seem to get in your way. And it is dirt cheap, at least right now.

I have been impressed, and I actually got rid of a fairly decent-sized home network because I just didn't have a need for it anymore. I don't really have anything against Amazon, but RackSpace uses an open standard, so theoretically if I had to migrate from RackSpace, it would be relatively easy. I am somewhat paranoid about getting locked into one provider.
