New federal rule could end recycling practice that benefits brewers, farmers and environment
Post Standard: Syracuse ^ | 03.28.14 | Don Cazentre

Brewers need a way to dispose of the wet and mushy grains that are a byproduct of making beer. Farmers are looking for inexpensive but healthful feed for their livestock.

So breweries across the country -- including those here in Central New York -- donate their used grains to local farmers. It's free: The farmers just stop by the breweries and cart the stuff away, usually in large plastic containers.

It's a classic example of reuse and recycling, but a provision in the proposed federal Food Safety Modernization Act might bring it to an end.

The proposed rule would require brewers to dry the grains out and package them so they can't be contaminated by human contact. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the change is designed to "provide greater assurance that animal food is safe and will not cause illness or injury to animals or humans."

But the change would require time, labor, packaging, record-keeping and maybe even equipment that the brewers say they can't afford. And brewers argue there's no evidence the current practice is unsafe.

"If we had to do all that, then we'd just dump it in a landfill," said Marc Rubenstein of Middle Ages Brewing Co. in Syracuse. "And that would be a shame because it's perfect for the farmers the way it is now."

Okey dokey, so the brewers can contract out their “waste” disposal for 10 cents a load. If the “contractor” just happens to dump it at the pig farm, oh well.

Funny how Ayers & Co. haven’t culled themselves to set an example.

These days, the government is like a giant, 900-pound retarded troll in a china shop.

Everywhere they turn, they end up trashing the joint.

The winter shortage of propane for peasant home heating and the attendant high prices and financial suffering were DIRECTLY caused by the evil retarded .govtroll INSISTING that we adulterate the gasoline supply with ethanol (which trashes small engines).

Farmers burned a lot of propane drying the bumper corn harvest.

Thanks, .govtroll!

Makes one wonder how the government might be different if it was run by Bill Ayers types from the WeatherUnderground that believe the population needs a major culling.

Coming soon when the next ice age kicks in....

It really doesn’t take a genius (or even Biden) to figure out that ANY of these Draconian Measures these idiots try to impose on the rest of us are NOT for the benefit of any one, person or environment, BUT just things that bring the most PAIN to those affected.

Under the Soros Administration, it is a given that rules are passed with the deliberate intent of hobbling or destroying whichever industry is involved. When enough businesses are killed off the economy collapses, and one of the left’s main goals is accomplished.

The government is just there to get in the way now. It’s infested with egomaniacal ideologues who want to invade every single area of our lives for no other reason except that they can.

Oh, no, the main reason is to destroy the economy and, thus, bring down the US.

But i know other brewers make bread with theirs.

&&&
Thanks so much for that information. I am preparing to brew beer for the first time, and I will now look for recipes for the spent grain.

Gee. Does Monsanto or ADM have anything to do with this? Here in the PNW there are brewpubs that have arrangments with local farmers that provide the meat from animals fed the very same mash that was used to brew the beer you’re having.

— Believe it was the ‘leader’ of Greenpeace - from his seaside Palace in Ireland - that said ‘Just because I don’t live what I preach doesn’t mean that I am wrong’ —

I told a commie college professor that he ought to preach what he practices.
Or he could actually live the commie life.
He could start by giving all his students a “C” grade as their introduction to socialism.

Jack Daniels Distillery has sold off the spent mash for at least 40 years that I am aware of. The hot spent mash is loaded into tank trucks, which drive to a farm and discharge it into troughs; cattle love it.

Sometimes not all of the alcohol is recovered from the mash; and you are right — drunk cows aren’t a pretty sight.

Spent mash contains no alcohol.

Well this lines up with the EPA trying to reduce cow flatulence.
