KITTERY, Maine (AP) — The Navy said farewell Friday to the USS Miami, the nuclear-powered submarine whose service was cut short when a shipyard employee trying to get out of work set it on fire, causing $700 million in damage.

The somber deactivation ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard marked the beginning of an inglorious end: Next year, the submarine will be towed to the West Coast to be cut up for scrap metal.

The person who did this ought to be imprisoned for life.

The worker who set the fire said he was suffering from anxiety and wanted to leave work early. He’s serving a 17-year prison sentence.

A sad day, indeed! I haven't followed this atrocity - can you tell me what, if anything, has happened to the misbegotten cretin who caused it?

A 700 million sub and the guy gets 17 years? He should be made to pay it all back, however long that takes. As it is, we are paying for his incarceration. Tie him to a lamp post with a ten foot leash to clean everything in that circle for the rest of his life. Just a thought.

A 700 million sub

Actually, $700 Million is only the cost of the repairs.

Pretty amazing, considering the guy just set fire to a bunch of rags in the top bunk of the bunkroom, in order to get out of work early ...

A cynical person might even think the current administration found a convenient excuse to get rid of a nuclear sub.

They’re coming with some pretty creative excuses to get rid of a lot of senior Nuclear Missile Officers, so that would be right-in-keeping with them ....

The only person we hated being on ship more than a queer was an arsonist. For the carnage a ship board fire can cause life in prison if non fatal and death if involving serious injury or then the death penalty should be imposed.
