Analysis: U.S. Cozies Up to Kiev Gov't Including Far Right(McCain pictured next to Neo-Nazi leader?)

The U.S. and Europe have been emphatic in their support of the new Ukrainian government – but a significant number of Washington's new bedfellows are members of what some experts class as extreme right-wing parties.

When Sen. John McCain traveled to Kiev in December, he told the crowd of 200,000 on Independence Square: "The free world is with you, America is with you, I am with you."

But among those stood next to the veteran Republican was Oleh Tyahnybok, leader of the Svoboda Party. Some policy analysts have called Svoboda ultra-nationalist and even neo-Nazi.

Svoboda, which means "Freedom," was given almost a quarter of the Cabinet positions in the interim government formed after the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych in February.

The party's policies center around protecting the rights of what it calls “ethnic Ukrainians,” the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture, and strict controls on immigration.

Although much of the more extreme content has now been removed from Svoboda’s leaflets, the European Parliament passed a resolution on Ukraine in 2012 that asked Kiev not to associate with the party on account of its “racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic views.”

One of the party's lawmakers was appointed to run the powerful defense ministry before being forced out. However, Svoboda still holds one of the vice prime minister posts as well as the ministries of agriculture and the environment.

I’m a realist Ivan....I see things for what they are rather than what I might otherwise wish they would be....wishful thinking can distort the facts I’ve learned....but there’s always ‘hope’.... but I frankly don’t see Ukraine being much more than what’s it been....as said...the only way any in Ukraine will know ‘the freedom they seek’ is to move to another country.... Ukraine will remain a tinder box for some years because they are so vastly divided among themselves....not to mention the country’s location.

If Ukraine were not on Russia’s border, or on the Black Sea...and wasn’t a transit for the pipelines..do you think there would be much interest by the US/EU as there has been, and is now?

I doubt very much....

BTW things heating up more and more on the Eastern border...Pres. cancelled trip to call emergency meetings.....expected big clashes tonight in Donestk....they’ve been at it all day....rumor has it Ukraine’s gov. won’t miss these east cities, as loss will ensure more control over Ukraine & Kiev without the Russian population heavy there.

Kiev worried as police in those cities are not taking orders and siding with the Pro_Russian protesters. Apparently Gov. can’t call out Troops because it’s not a declaration of war...but am sure ‘special forces’ are already there if not on the way.... I read EuroMaiden/RightDecotr set out the SOS call for all to rally in Donestk. Might just all be propaganda, but said picked up per Russian communication radios someones plugged into.

You're right,.Ukrainians will do the fighting and their blood shed...not the big players. I've often wondered if the players had to fight themselves how their decisions might be a whole nother story.

What I was referencing was the decisions pertaining to the direction of the country...Ukrainians will be the bystander's for the most part...at best chiseled down to comply by the dictates of outsiders. That's the price when you cannot stand on your own.

(....”My family participated at the Maidan, my uncle and his family live in Kyiv and were among the many average Ukrainians who were simply fed up”.....)

What’s happening in Ukraine has little to do with the “average Ukranians”, aside from the protests and fighting when and if it comes. And they lost control of the protest relatively early on. Who do you think was providing the funding for this? We know that some of the oligarchs were, as well those who wanted revege for Putin kicking them out. We also know the US/Eu were providing funding......but only to depose of the Governing powers so they can shift Ukraine back on “their” track.

As mentioned before..the deal was sealed and we see it playing out so:

Russia has Crimea and Ukraine’s oil off Crimea...and possible the EAstern cities as this continues to the next phase.

US has Ukraines gold, shipped out in the dead of night no less, (thanks to Yats), which is a down-payment for US revenues massed into Ukraine for the Revolution and any other investment. Ukraine won’t be getting that back.

EU has it’s economic trade deal, without having to take on Ukraine’s debtload, and the IMF along with the EU will be calling the shots of asterity.

So now Ukraine has three boots on it’s neck. Would be nice to imagine they’d be generous to the people. But so far that hasn’t, nor does it look to happen. Ukraine will have to find it’s way out with the “tools” given it to dig with. But the digging they will have to do for many many years....

My guess is there will be yet another protest in the near future, once they all get their second wind, the current affairs are barely over if that.

Further the Presidents running are all part and parcel of the same old school house....Ukraine’s come full circle, again.

Once again, what you are posting is a,lot of nonsense, the desperate need for there to be some sort of major conspiracy is laughable. There are a great deal of changes occurring in the new government structure, there will be elections, Timochenko wont win, it will be an all new government that is free of Rusdian control and manipulation, it wont have a government that is working actively to destroy the interests of its people, to weaken the military, empower a select group of jackbooted Berkut thugs, Ukraine will finally have a chance at a freer future, it may be good, it may be bad, but the decisions will be made by Ukrainans with the best interests of Ukraine in mind, not Russian puppets with the best interests of Putin in mind.

Latest I've found on Ukraine updates:

-Pro-Russian protesters are in control of government buildings in Lugansk, Kharkiv, and Donetsk eastern Ukraine.

-Call out by all ground players to rendezvous, in Donestk primarily.

-Police have sided with the Pro-Russians for the most part, has Kiev Gov. worried...not following orders.

-Planned use of force on Donestk Administration Building, to regain control, by Ukrainian "special forces" sent there by Pres....and they know they are coming....staged apparently for after midnight sometime.

Here's Donestk, pretty nice community from the photos I've seen

You are certainly “free” to laugh all you want. That will not change the trajectory of Ukraine and the powers that be who will move it as they determine.

You do know, I'll assume, that without Ukraine agreeing to US Missile Bases on their land they would get little help from the USA down the pike. And for EU’s monetary assist the nation must go, like Greece, with austerity controls...meaning pensions, social services etc. cut,cut,cut...which are already on the planning board if not some fully in place already.

Worked well for the Powers that be to state “sacrifice” by the people is ‘necessary’ to equip the army defense's etc.....Too bad Nato didn't step in as Ukrainians were mislead to believe...but only possible..nothing set in stone. Rather Nato put troops on the borders of it's Member states.

Ukraine wants to play in the Big Boys League and they cannot do so with amateurs easily manipulated at the wheel....whose goal is to align themselves with the Powers that be by assuming political positions. They'll be like our Congress now...yes men.

My grief is not with the Ukrainian people, nor any other nation per say. It's with the EU/US agenda to put all nations under one roof and depriving them of their independence under a false idealism it's for the good of the whole...when in fact it's a redistribution of wealth, commerce and revenues to the nations who have the most to offer in resources etc...and this to fill the Governing coffers of the International Leadership...NONE of which were elected, rather appointed by God only knows and those who did so.

Putin, China, India, Egypt... and the Middle Eastern nations, along with India are opposing this "reach" as they desire nations remain Independant and determine their own trade deals etc. rather than under the governance of a world group ear-marked to do just that. However, because of the EU/US push, they are forced to Unite into their own Groups..Eurasia..Brics etc. to offset the EU/US/Nato advances....and thus we also have with Middle Eastern Nations grouping together as well.

I am 'for' Independant Nations to Govern themselves...and this includes my country the USA.... The World Leaders are lost in their quest for World Dominance, and this on the backs of all nations peoples, who will be fortunate to get the crumbs from their table. I've watched my country get stripped of it's manufacturing, it's revenues, to fund world nations from their economies to their wars, to rebuilding thier nations, and that at the expense of the lives of our soldiers, our incomes, and the health and wealth of our citizens. The US is now left a shell of what it was.. and do you think for one minute any other nation will remember ours when it falls? or come to it's aide? Of course not...

... so I'm done with sacrificing for nations who only turn and complain like children they didn't get enough from us....and Ukraine is already doing just that. Fight your own wars and defend your own country rather than continue to be a welfare state...and be grateful for the little Ukraine has...or move to another nation.

Whoa!......Ukraine Presidential frontrunner (Oligarch)'Poroshenko' said he would NOT seek to join NATO as this "could split the country."....further states...says any new leadership of the country should have "zero-tolerance" of corruption."....yet states..."Ukrainians have earned the right to a path to membership in the European Union". (http://www.rferl.org/content/ukraine-poroshenko-corruption-nato/25323193.html)

So Poroshenko gets it....in part. Looks like he's playing his cards right to the voters, and letting Nato/EU know the ball will be in His hands, not their's. Political talk comes cheap though...would be great if he even came through with 50% of what he says......He does look to win..and of course tightly knit to all players...and can deal with Russia when he has to....interesting twist.

To: caww; All

I think you nailed it in your first 4 lines.

When does (or how long does it take for) the the U.S. intervene when Christians are slaughtered en masse like they were in Sudan?

When does the U.S. intervene when non-Christians are slaughtered in sub-Saharan Africa?

You guessed. Know why? No oil...
