Pierre man protests paying perpetual child support (South Dakota & Canada)
Rapid City Journal ^ | April 5, 2014 | Joe O'Sullivan

Both of Haraldson's children are in their 20s. South Dakota's child support laws only require child support payments up to age 18 in most cases, and 19 in one other instance.

But Haraldson, born and raised in South Dakota, was living in Canada at the time of his divorce. There, child support laws can go on indefinitely, unless he hires a lawyer and fights.

"I was told it was going to be $20,000 to $30,000 to litigate, and I'd have a 50-50 chance," Haraldson said by phone from Pierre. "I just went, 'Oh, my God.'"

Haraldson, a 52-year-old computer support specialist who lives in Pierre, has an administrative hearing with the state scheduled for Monday to protest the payments. But given the nature of state and federal laws, he may not have much luck.

Why does the government have anything to do with marriage? It's a religious institution, "separation of church and state" and all that rot.

First of all don’t lay in a bed or elsewhere with a person who is only looking for a welfare check besides the money/support the state makes you pay.

With child support, the parent is on the hook. Not the taxpayers.

Parents should support their kids. So that is a conservative principle. Its the exact opposite of welfare.

The only decent thing any family does is they support each other and their progeny.

Definitely have been to the Corn Palace, I may have even posted images of it here before. I understand they change the corn every year and on the net, one can see old post cards of it. Nice.

Sturgis makes a lot of people know where SD is, no, I haven’t been to it but know many people who have. As for me, maybe the way it was back decades ago might have been a good time. To each their own, I’d go just to see it if given the chance.

Where did I go wrong? It seems to me you and I are addressing child support from different societal actions and consequences.

Sort of like our entitlement programs paid by taxpayers, who pay whether they have children or not, right? So if he pays for life in Canada, do the children get any of his support money, or are they state supported for life?

That is silly.

You could always do your own marriage and still can, if you don't want the government to recognize your marriage, then don't seek their recognition.

Just because Thomas Jefferson and George Washington wanted legal marriages, doesn't mean that you have to want it.

Its a great state if you love 360 degree horizons and quiet. Also you can see the milky way in town. I love it there, nice quiet life.

it’s not a crime, so no, they wouldn’t extradite him

But Obama would use an EO to deport him...

“It makes sense to help pay for your adult’s children education . . . “

Only if your 18 year old daughter is not a b*tch and demands that you pay for all her education and room and board. Oh, we just had a court case just like that, and the judge ruled that she was a b*tch.

It may or may not make sense. It certainly, and thankfully, isn’t the law here to be forced to support your kid after he or she turns 18.
