Washington Post ^ | April 18, 2014 | by Fred Hiatt

Poland and the United States will announce next week the deployment of U.S. ground forces to Poland as part of an expansion of NATO presence in Central and Eastern Europe in response to events in Ukraine. That was the word from Poland’s defense minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, who visited The Post Friday after meeting with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon on Thursday.

Siemoniak said the decision has been made on a political level and that military planners are working out details. There will also be intensified cooperation in air defense, special forces, cyberdefense and other areas. Poland will play a leading regional role, “under U.S. patronage,” he said.

Why? You really do not understand?

The answer is because it’s far safer and less costly for us in the long run for Europe to be (relatively) happy & fat, yet militarily weak, while we take care of most of the defense load and maintaining order. Up until Europe became dependent on energy from Russia, topped off by Obambi taking the reigns, this worked a heck of a lot better than anything in the last several hundred years has. Nukes only up the ante - I shudder to think of what history would have been had The Bomb been available to the Europe of 1935.

Too many assume that the Euro-weenies are naturally that way. They are not - it is merely a thin veneer we imposed on them after WW2.

If even half of the below is true, the Ukrainians are correctly not depending on Kerry and Obama, and preparing for a long war, or, someone (the Poles?) have indicated support beyond what’s been publicly promised, and the U.S. knows it HAS to have a tripwire in Poland to deter Putin from retaliating that far west.

” April 19, News on situation in Ukraine.

There is imitation of some negotiation with Russians, in this way Ukraine buying time. Firsts days of war showed our army is like Russian army was in 1994 when they entered first Chechen war. They were losing tanks, selling each other arms and then all together drinking this money away... at first war looked like a joke but then it start getting very real.

Ukraine entering war and can’t match Russian with cruelty. For instance there was fight on the beach and Ukrainians stopped shooting to let some beach goers pass by. Today they announced that “anti-terrorist” operations in the east would be put on hold over Easter. Meanwhile mobilization is on the way, they dig 1000 kms ditch along the border with Russia to stop tanks. Bomb shelters prepared in big cities. We have lot of bomb shelters left from time of Cold War which now in terrible condition. What interesting is that in regions that border Russia newly appointed governors our billionaires. They pay ditch digging and war related projects. Regional elite forces on their budget, they also pay big money to people who will capture Russian terrorists and their arms. $10.000 for head+couple of thousand more for their machine gun.

It was smart move to let billionaire we call them oligarchs finance Ukraine defence programme. In this way they protect their capital. Voltaire said “The Aim Of All War Is Robbery” this is very true and rich people understand Russians not coming to protect Russian language... they coming to rob rich people out of their wealth and factories.

Another important news is that Ukraine cut off water to Crimea. How long can they live without water before they will move inland to take Kherson water channel by force? If no water in next couple of weeks then farming season in Crimea will be wasted. From very beginning it was clear that Crimea is suitcase without holder, no way to carry it... holder is in Kherson. They should occupy both or non.”

http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/kiddofspeed/maydan/updateapril19.html

That last is very interesting because Kherson is not a Russian dominated area. If Ukraine keeps the water shut off, I assume it’s because they want to force Russia’s hand, and then have as much time to counter as possible, before cold weather returns.

Ukraine has arms factories - I wonder if any make anti-tank weapons?

In fairness to Italy, in any location away from land-based Russian air support, the Italian Navy could put Russia’s Black Sea Fleet (other than subs) on the bottom in short order.

Whether that will hold up, as Italy has been making big defense cuts recently, remains to be seen.

Now, the Russians will see this as a provocation.

This does not mean much as Russians see the existence of Poland as a provocation. They view the fall of their Evil Empire as the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the last century.

The ones who would feel the pain are not the countries with silly leftist policies. It would be very cynical to let Poland and the Baltics to be destroyed in order to teach a dubious lesson to Germany.

There is no socialism in Easter Europe after Russian occupying forces left and we were free to set the policies of our own countries.

Very interesting stuff. Thanks for posting. I’ve marked her page for future reading. No way to tell how much truth is in it, of course, but it’s still quite interesting!

....”the decision has been made on a political level”....

Well this is no surprise...the meetings at the Atlantic Council have been full of leaders of the Baltics, and Poland President most recently, giving their speeches and assessments of the situation with Ukraine for weeks now, they all want “more” military and equipment and troops. Prior to this Nato was hashing over what it was going to do about the fact too many nations have opted out of sending troops the past, as with Libya and at other times, they had to determine if or not they were going to allow “any” to opt out in the future.....but as always they all pushed hard for “more “US involvement and much was centered on how the US should do this.

Imo....Nato and the EU, along with the Atlantic group “think-squad”, are determining what we will or won’t do...Obama is simply “following” accordingly...and doing so without any congressional authority to do so.

This deployment will have to be "paid for" so we are going to slash the troops and retired veterans pay and benefits some more........we can't cut something vital like Food Stamps or one of the 75 Federal "Job Training" programs.

I can tell you directly that our military is preparing for going against Russian troops and weapons (which is their job).

Infantry are being trained specifically to identify Russian military hardware and combat training simulations against Russian troops.

Keep in mind that this is preparation...something we want our military to do. It does not mean we are going to war.

Moving them from Germany to Poland is a reasonable move in my opinion. Poland is pro-solidarity, iow, they value freedom. They’ve been more than friendly to the USA. They are much cheaper than Germany, so those draw-down forces in Germany are probably just moving up the road a bit.

There’s sense to it, but I’ll believe it when I see it, and if I were Poland, I wouldn’t count on them being there very long.

Thousands of Christians getting slaughtered in Africa... Obama could care less.

But if you beat up a few sodomites he imposes sanctions, and God forbid if your country votes to join Russia in overwelming numbers because you want nothing to do with the sodomite west! Then he will send in troops!

we have to supply to money and troops because Europe has none of either because it spent all it’s money on welfare programs and on placating union thugs.

The day WE became the evil empire, was the day it was truly over for us.

And WE became the evil empire when we started aggressively promoting abortion and sodomy abroad.
