The reading of political tea leaves is one of Washington's most popular parlor games.
And when it comes to the future of House Speaker John Boehner, political soothsayers are busy divining patterns in tea leaves, wine sediments and coffee grounds to determine whether the Ohio Republican will stick around for another term. Questions are rampant as to whether Boehner could decide to leave on his own accord or be shoved out the door by a cabal of upstart conservatives intent to flip the House of Representatives on its ear.
This tasseography involving the speaker's gavel takes on many forms. The Capitol Hill clairvoyants interpreted the following events as harbingers that Boehner is sure to soon hang it up:
In December, the Ohio Republican took the rare step of blistering conservative advocacy groups like the Club for Growth and Heritage Foundation. Those organizations routinely pelt Republican offices with messages about how to vote on key issues. And Boehner had enough.
"Frankly, I just think they have lost all credibility," Boehner said. "I don't care what they do."
In particular, Boehner chastised the groups for driving conservatives to shutter the government unless they defunded the Affordable Care Act. Boehner said those same advocates later conceded they didn't think their approach would work.
"Are you kidding me?" Boehner vented. "I think they're pushing our members into places they don't want to be."

In OH, the excuses for Republicans have a little trick to control nominations. Last HOR cycle, a 'pub didn't drop out until after the primary, so some Republican Party committee (controlled by the power brokers) got to choose the next nominee, a friend of Boehner in a safe district.
If any change needs be made to our constitution, there needs be no lame duck secession's, if you are out, you are out right after the results are in and official. I don't trust these weasels one iota.
Never understood the point in that exercise in futility. Looked like nothing more than a loyalty test.
But a relevant and pressing question is does Bohner plan on having the House pass anything, like amnesty, this year after the primaries?
- - - Cantor recently enraged many Republicans by sneaking a Medicare bill through the House by voice vote. - - -
Hmmmmm - - - ?
Will Doormat Republican Cantor keep his new nickname of Sneaky?
Lemme see - - - :
* Eric Sneaky Cantor;
* Eric The House Sneak Cantor;
* Sneaky Eric C.
Sure looks like Boehner is grooming the right replacement to replace him as another Obama-friendly Speaker of the US House of Representatives!
MOVE ON!
FORWARD!
Like most empty suits, Boehner’s ego is boundless. He feels the position which he has so squandered is his property.
His body language and demeanor and deeds around Obama and Biden look like someone who is wholly beaten and submissive, and who resents it mightily. They have some dirt on him that would destroy him utterly. He is compromised, and as such is a very valuable acquisition. I don’t think he has permission to leave.
He may be carried out of the speakership feet first, but he is not going to walk out voluntarily.
Actually boner, you have no credibility.
"Are you kidding me?" Boehner vented. "I think they're pushing our members into places they don't want to be."
Good, vote right or start packing.
If you are in a district with a marginal Republican who could lose even in the coming tidal wave consider this: campaign against him/her asking voters if they believe he/she will vote with Bone head for amnesty. Those that do believe an amnesty betrayal is coming might stay home or skip the line. I’m so sick of my Republican Mike Grimm I really don’t care if the Democrat wins. I’m in NYC so there is little difference anyway. I’d dump Grimm so we can all stop pretending.
Had there been genuine leadership in the House, concessions could of been won.
Look at the White House position: "our negotiation strategy is not to negotiate"
A true leader, ie the opposite of boehner & mcconnell, could have made the potus look like an ass, you know like putin and assad do on a regular basis.
That's why both of these guys, along w/ their syncophants, need to go.
Not in that case.
That one was too screwed up from the start because Obamacare was exempt from a shutdown.
It started with those defund commercials.
Then in Senate vote Cruz tried to filibuster the house budget that actually defunded Obamacare (this was for technical reasons), and he couldn't get GOP Senate support on it. They voted FOR it and took credit for defunding Obamacare, then Reid removed that defund part and passed it leaving Obamacare as is.
Having failed in Senate Cruz called on house to not pass any budget that didn't defund Obamacare. (Talk radio echoed that)
But Obamacare was prefunded so no budget passed left Obamacare fully funded, it just got GOP blame for shutdown of unrelated stuff.
Then the next flawed talk radio driven idea was for the house to pass individual appropriations that didn't EVEN defund Obamacare violating the whole so called principle.
(by then it was a confusing mess)
Then the house passed a bill that said that furloughed Fed employees would get pay for the two weeks not working.
That was the sign that it was over.
Then Boehner put up a budget debt limit bill that didn't defund Obama, but it did defund House and Senates Obamacare subsidies.
Lou Gomert and others joined Pelosi in defeating that budget (they get that $$$ now.)
So the next day Bohner just put up the Reid bills and it ended.
Did anyone here at the time really claim they believed that Obama was to cave to the above jumbled messages and actions? I don't remember seeing any.
That was a long list of events,
but the two that stand out is the fact that Obamacare was exempt from a shutdown (talk radio hosts didn’t tell their audience this) and that the individual appropriations strategy called for by talk radio hosts violated the whole defund so called principle that they were supposedly committed to.
To make matters worse was the house bill to pay federal employees for the two weeks off.
After that all there was zero consistent point of it all.
A leader foresees the the battle field and deploys accordingly.
Niether boehner nor mcconnell had any stomach for a fight, and they still don't BTW, and so were looking for a safe landing spot from the beginning.
Technically the GOP had only limited options, nevertheless there were strategic victories to be had that were pissed away by feckless, clueless, spineless courtiers.

Exactly. The GOP leadership just has no interest in any engaged opposition to the Dem agenda.
Remember how the Dems went ballistic over the Vitter amend? That should have become a central plank of the GOP fight against kenyancare. Yet leadership just surrendered on it and we haven’t heard a word about that issue since from them.
I am for the extinction of the RINO’s. (but not Rhino’s)
B. Hussein Obama has faithfully carried out his pledge to Fundamentally transform the United States of America, while our sorry Doormat Republicans in the US Congress are STILL amazed, surprised, shocked or in Boehners case, sad that B. Hussein is doing exactly what he promised to do AFTER >5 VERY LONG YEARS of Obamanation!
Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, Ryan, Issa, Mike Rogers, King of NY are just a few of the US House members who have refused to hold the Democrat Obama Administration accountable for their destructive actions.
There has never been a more corrupt administration more deserving of US House Special Prosecutor Investigations than the Democrat Obama administration.
Thus, Speaker Boehner has been derelict in his duties to his office as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, PERIOD.
US House Speaker Boehner and right hand men Cantor and McCarthy need to be voted out of their Obama-friendly leadership positions ASAP by the US House Members.
2014 is our opportunity to rid Congress of as many Doormat Republicans as possible so that we Conservatives can take back our Nation instead of waiting for the Doormat to Democrats Republicans to behave as if they really wanted to work FOR our Republic.
I’m certain you had some wisdom to pass on to us, but would you please re-state it so we can understand it? I’m not trying to be mean, but I have no idea what you are trying to say.
I am not trying to say that they (Bohner and McConnell) are good leaders or good fighters because they are certainly weak , but the shutdown fight was not started by them and not planned by them, it was thrown on them.
So the flawed defund strategy (and PR) was thrown at them and they were ordered to go along(primarily Bohner in that case).
Prior to the start of it I posted a few times that it would end exactly as it did. I think we all knew it would.
And this merely highlights why its so important that more muscular leadership is a neccesity going forward.
The attacks on the TeaParty from the GOPers demonstrate that we can't afford to lessen the pressure.
Those bast@rds are more than happy to rollover on their backs for obama.
Actually, Boehner let the Republican caucus have its way.
It was McConnell who torpedoed Cruz, Boehner and the House by agreeing to a "compromise" (that wasn't).
Similarly, it was McConnell who sold out the House Republicans on keeping the Bush tax cuts.
Understand: I am not supporting Boehner. But, of the two leaders, it is McConnell who is responsible for most of the double-dealing to date.
Keep in mind that the Republicans in control of the party in OH are not the friends of conservatives.
