Karen Handel for Senate
redstate.com ^ | 4/23/14 | Erick Erickson

I have not wanted to take a position on the Georgia Senate race. I have several friends running. I have maintained that my heart is with Paul Broun and my head is with Karen Handel.

If I could will someone into the Senate, it’d be Congressman Paul Broun. He’s a terrific and profoundly decent person. But in the end my head has won out for a number of reasons. Early voting is starting in Georgia and I will be voting for Karen Handel.

Between Broun and Handel, Handel has momentum upward and has been increasing in fundraising. Broun has been running a grassroots campaign, but he will need more than that to penetrate the Atlanta market where Handel already has high name ID.

Handel, meanwhile, does a few things Broun does not do. First, she neutralizes the War on Women argument. Second, she is palatable to the deep pockets that Broun is not palatable to. There is going to be a runoff. Between Handel and Broun, Handel will not cause a deluge of funds coming from all the wrong people to help elect worse candidate. If Broun is in the runoff, while I’d gladly support him, I think you’d see the establishment pour every penny they have into crushing him. He’d either limp badly out of the runoff or we’d wind up with someone worse.

I’m proud to support Karen Handel. She has a compelling life story. She is a pro-life conservative. She has won the state of Georgia before — something Michelle Nunn has not done. She is a friend. And she’ll be an improvement in that Senate seat.

I hated to choose because of my friendship with Paul Broun and with Karen Handel.

She is who I will vote for in the primary also. If she survives the first round, I’ll vote for her in a runoff, too.

Beyond that, I haven’t made up my mind yet.

I guess I’d have to agree. I have wondered what happened to Paul Broun. He just seemed to disappear from the radar screen after announcing. I liked Handel better than Deal, when she was running for the republican candidate for governor, so I would gladly support Handel for Senate. I do also like Broun, but it seems he is running far behind. Kingston is my US Rep, but he is so lukewarm that I cannot find it in me to vote for him...unless it is to keep his current seat, as opposed to losing it to a democrat.

Blech. Settling for mediocrity. But she’s a girl, and we’ve got to have one to run against Michelle Nunn, don’t we? The GOP has bought into identity politics and abandoned principle.

Broun could beat Nun but it would be a closer race

Isn’t she currently running 5th in the polls in a six person race?

Oh, I don’t subscribe to the ‘girl’ thing at all. That’s just Erickson’s take on it. Michelle Nunn is a lightweight with only the fading remembrance of a once-famous name here.

My wife and I were watching her ad on TV down last night. I muted the promise-lies she was making and made my wife look at her gestures - she’s a coached puppet just like Obama but not near as convincing. Frankly, she doesn’t have the feigned, morally-indignant fire of a faux populist Democrat to get elected. A little white mouse with a pair of glasses.

Well the GOP pushing the same argument as usual. A true conservative(Paul Broun) from a really red state can’t win so vote for the moderate.

I have nothing agains’t Karen Handel. In fact In 2010 I voted for her in the GOP primary for Governor. But she’s not a hard core conservative. She will be somewhat better than Saxby Chambliss which is not difficult to achieve. She will vote with the leadership and pretty much not rock the boat.

Paul Broun on the other hand is a staunch conservative who will stand with Rand and Ted Cruz and Mike Lee. I have no doubt that he can trounce Michelle Nunn in a general election. She is a nobody. Her claim to fame is Sam Nunn is her daddy. That won’t get her elected to the Senate from GA.

Michelle Nunn has a face made for radio.

And I doubt she’ll get more than 42% of the vote.

Are you saying that you might vote for Michelle Nunn?

In this case, I’m afraid so. What’s wrong with running a Conservative female. The GOP is already viewed as the Party of wrinkled-face, gray-haired, old, white men. Look at our last 5 candidates for President. Uh huh? If the Dems nominate Hillary, I’d sure as hell like to see the GOP run Sarah. Imagine: The gorgeous Sarah Palin standing on a Debate stage beside the old hag.

Karen Hanel is the worst Republican candidate in the race, but the one anointed as “safe” by the GOPe. I cannot fathom hearing her whiny voice droning on for the next six, twelve or eighteen years, lecturing us on what feels important to her. But she’ll be OUR nanny, of course. Georgia can do so much better than Karen Handel.

ga senate update. erickson for handel. no surprise. erickson backed handel for governor in 2o1o. meanwhile, neal boortz endorsed kingston and called broun a sure loser. the ricketts family pac is running ads slamming gingrey, broun, and kingston. ricketts hasn’t endorsed anyone yet. i suspect ricketts will back handel. a palin endorsement and ricketts pac go hand in hand.

Nunn is an idiot. She wont comment on Port of Savannah or on gun control.

I think Perdue is the worst. He will be the Vance McAllister of amnesty. “You Tea Party bigots have never travelled the world and don’t know about other cultures”.

Paul Broun is fiscally conservative but is to the left of Nunn on funding issues in GA. She wont be able to attack him there.

The evolution stuff wont hurt him. It will look elitist.

Broun also has the best answer on banning all abortion.

I think Kingston will be better than Perdue. Maybe like a Mike Enzi.

Gingrey and Perdue already made gaffes on rape and elitism.

Pete Ricketts running for NE governor got Steve King to endorse him.

Gingrey and Broun pal around with Steve King on immigration.

Which ad does Ricketts family have out attacking Broun?

I thought Ricketts attacked Gingrey and a PAC from SC attacked Kingston.

Oh really? The universal thought of everyone besides you is that Kingston is the GOP-E choice. His bank account bears that out, he has more money in the till than even Perdue. Sean Hannity even endorsed him, oh and the US Chamber of Commerce, that really says it all. There is your "anointed" candidate, Jack Kingston.

And if Perdue anything like his cousin, blah.

Broun has ties to the Paul movement and is a creationist, that's not "true conservative", that's flaky. Gotta disagree with ya Georgiagirl2. The chances he blows the race are much higher than anyone else's. And we should risk it cause he's the best at throwing red meat?

I think Handel is clearly the best choice, if only by default. Mr. Redstate's endorsement is not a positive for me though.

It's worth mentioning Handel has the least money by far. Hopefully Palin's support can help her out there.

Where I used to work often required me to follow the federal budget and all the congressional set asides that came from the Senate or House. By far, Kingston was the “pork” King of Georgia years on end. Whatever business owner entrepreneur spirit he had 20 years ago is gone. He’s a professional politician - nothing else.

I was called last night with a RoboPoll. Two questions: 1) what is your most important issue in the upcoming election? (economy, spending and budget, etc. etc. -no illegal alien mention), and 2)who will you vote for?

Karen Handel was number 1 followed by the others. I punched one and it was over.

Not saying that. But if they run somebody like Kingston or Gingrey - a leftover politician whose time has come for that ‘promotion’ after years of cronyism and loyalty to the GOPe, and end up like Chambliss or Isakson, I’d likely just not vote for either and leave that box blank.
