Frontier Airlines has completely unbundled its economy fare, which means customers must pay a fee for carry-on bags in addition to checked bags and seat assignments.
The new policy is in effect for travel booked on and after April 28.
Customers are allowed to bring aboard one personal item for free (handbag, purse, pocketbook, backpack, briefcase or laptop), but an additional carry-on will cost $25 at the time of initial travel purchase at Frontier’s website or the airline’s call center.
Paying for a carry-on at airport check-in will cost $35; at the gate, $50.
Frontier’s Ascent and Summit level members of its EarlyReturns loyalty program will continue to receive a free carry-on bag and two free checked bags.
A few items can be carried on for free in addition to one personal item, including canes, portable oxygen, child safety seats, diaper bags and prayer rugs.
By unbundling, Frontier said its lowest fares have been reduced by an average of 12% on nonstop routes.
Customers still have the option to purchase a Classic Plus fare, which includes a refundable ticket, no change fees, a seat with extra legroom, one checked bag and one carry-on. The airline's GDS-only fare has been discontinued.
Frontier has followed Spirit Airlines in charging for carry-on luggage, and it also has imitated Spirit with the launch of a travel savings club.
The club, called Discount Den, offers special deals and savings on checked and carry-on bags.
In addition, several airlines have revised the allowable size of carryon bags downward so it would be a good idea to check these limits for the airline on which you will fly.
This is awesome! I really like the idea of paying for what you use. Personally, I believe they should even charge passengers by the pound.
And I just thought of a great way to do it: Charge everyone as if they weigh 300lbs, but if you do a voluntary weigh in you can get “lower rate” savings of “x” dollars per ten pounds less than 300 lbs. This way nobody is forced to weigh in. It’s voluntary. ;-)
Guess you can roll up a weeks worth of clothes in the rug and carry it on!

Every airline charges for carry-ons; most simply don’t itemize it. The cost of your ticket is directly (but not solely) related to the weight of the cargo be it human or luggage.
I’m thinking a lot of people will be using backpacks that never have before.
Spirit is now charging $45 for checked luggage and no reclining seats. Scrooge them and Frontier suckeroos too.
Just more corporate morons performing more ground prep for the American Hitler to get elected on promises to punish those EEEEEEEVIL GRRRRREEEEEDY Bastages who are “nickel and diming” you to death.

I go to Arkansas twice a year to visit family. Costs me less than $20 to UPS a box there a week before I leave. After I come home my cousin sends it back for me. A lot cheaper than paying baggage fees and I don’t have to schlep anything through the airport.
PRAYER RUGS????????? What the...? Do you plan on throwing your rug on the floor during the flight a pray to Allah?

Made a 3000 mile round trip last month. Gas and motel were less than the cheapest air fare available. Plus, got some nice photos on the way.

on my trip to the Bay Area, i checked in just one gigantic suitcase which held another suitcase at 40 pounds... i wanted to bring stuff from the Bay Area to NC...
i did learn on this trip to never again load my carry-on with hardback books... way too heavy to lift up to put in overhead compartment... and way too heavy to take down... had to rely on others polite enough to do it for me...
typically, my carry-on is small enough to fit under the seat... i usually do not use the overhead compartment... i have traveled a good 6 round trips--Cali/NC in the passed 12 months... other than one leg of a trip, i have taken Southwest Airlines--my favorite...
