TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS Tampa/AP) Florida States Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston has been suspended from the universitys baseball team after being issued a citation for stealing crab legs.
The Leon County Sheriffs Office said Tuesday that Winston was caught shoplifting at a Tallahassee Publix Monday night and was issued a citation.
Major Michael Wood said during a press conference that Winston told authorities that he just forgot to pay the $32 for the crab legs and other seafood items.
Jameis Winston has not been arrested for any crime. He was issued a civil citation, Wood said.
Wood added that Winston was very cooperative with authorities.
Winston must complete the pre-diversion program or he will be facing a petty theft charge. He also must complete 20 hours of community service.
I am confident he will complete his community service obligation and the situation will be resolved soon, FSU baseball coach Mike Martin said in a statement to Baseball America.
Football coach Jimbo Fisher says he supports Martins decision.
The 20-year-old Winston was investigated last year when a fellow Florida State student reported that he raped her. But prosecutors said there wasnt enough evidence to charge him. The Associated Press reports Winston was among a group of players questioned about their involvement in a BB gun battle and Tallahassee Burger King employees complained Winston was among players stealing soft drinks and making a mess in the store.
Winstons reported citation comes as the NCAA approved to expand meal allowances for all athletes.
Division I schools are now allowed to provide unlimited meals and snacks to all athletes, including walk-ons.
The move came after Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier complained during the Final Four that he sometimes went to bed starving because he couldnt afford food.
Schools were previously allowed to provide three meals per day or a stipend for those meals to scholarship athletes. The new rule now allows walk-ons to receive the same allowances and allows schools to provide more meals and snacks, too.
Winston is a relief pitcher for the Seminoles and recently earned his first win of the season.
(I did actually have one in my garage one year. - wasn't wearing red and white with an upside down "M" though))
The article says other seafood items, too. I wonder how much the total bill was?
Mannheim Steamroller’s first ‘hit’...................
We used to fish for crabs with a chicken neck tied to a string.
You just pull them in slow and net them when they get to the surface. They didn’t let go.
Totally unbelievable that a person could forget to pay for a pile of seafood at Publix.
Old Bay crab boil, Butter, probably some nut crackers and implements, probably close to a hundred bucks...............
THAT’s GREAT!.....................GO GATORS!!!!....................
No, the red part was just a coincidence.
The LSM labels are very good IMHO.
RED blooded AMERICANS vs BLUE blooded liberals.....................
I’ve used those as well, whatever gets ‘old’ in the freezer........................
An positive indication for veracity....
He got special treatment because he’s a football quarterback.
Any one else and the poor guy would be carted off to jail.
Crime pays in this country - if you have social standing and the right connections.
Gosh, that happens to me all the time too.........
Like Steve Martin’s old routine about “How to have a million bucks and not pay ANY taxes.”
First, get a million bucks.
Then when the IRS comes calling, just say, “I forgot!”..................
It’s the best...................
I don’t have anything against the Badgers...I think there are a LOT of good folks in Wisconsin. My company is affiliated with Case New Holland and I travel there on business now and then. Good people.
Then again that’s true for all states and I try to remember that.
Didn't they use red paint?
Those are great!
So, where do you buy your cheese curds?
