A Florida Resident Drove Around with a Cellphone Jammer for Two Years Before Being Caught

Many states have banned talking on your cellphone while driving, but Florida is not one of them. So 60-year-old vigilante Jason R. Humphreys took matters into his own hands.

As The Tampa Tribune reports, Humphreys brought a cellphone jammer along on his commute every day for two years. You know, to ensure that his fellow commuters remained focused on the road. Until two local sheriff’s deputies caught him in the act and slapped him with $48,000 worth of fines, which he must pay or otherwise respond to within a month.

Humphreys is up Obama Creek here. He better lawyer up and hope he can get those fines reduced.

For years, Charles Clemons operated TOUCH 106.1, a pirate FM station in Boston. In 2008, the FCC hit him with a $17k fine (Bush's fault). He still hasn't paid it, although they did finally get around to raiding him on 18 April. Confiscated all his gear.

Sounds like he was causing chaos for the sake of causing chaos. Eris is pleased.

Any bets he also liked driving the far left lane at or 2 mph below the speed limit to enforce that as well? If they can prove he interfered with anyone’s emergency communications personal or public service he just rack up federal felony counts.

Who wants to listen to jack donkeys on their cell phones when you’re spending hundreds of dollars?

Which is one reason it ticks me off that airlines are now allowing people to call while in-flight.

The author wrote Jamming devices overpower cellphones by transmitting a signal on the same frequency and at a high enough power that the two signals collide and cancel each other out.

He needs a basic understanding of radio and physics. A phone receiver will lock on the strongest signal on the cell phone band. Build a transmitter that is only slightly stronger than the cell tower at the point of reception and the cell phone doesn't work. Saying the signals "collide" is just stupid.

Even a 100Mw transmitter (very low wattage) will jam cell phones over several hundred feet. Depends on the distance from the tower.

“Where would one get a cellphone jammer? Ah, you know, just out of curiosity....”

I remember while going to work my last two years (I’m now retired), I would many times have to wait a minute or more at a certain red light. If I was the first car waiting for the red light to turn, I would watch the cars with a green light turning in front of me. I would bet one out of five drivers had a cell phone glued to their ear. As they were turning!!!

Federal law prohibits importing, marketing, sale, possession or using these types of wireless signal jamming devices, in part because it’s unsafe for people who need to make 911 calls.

You can see just how radically the US Government has departed from the Constitution. The issue for them is "safety" which is the first refuge of tyranny.

The fact is this is a personal property issue. Better to have the cell companies, other drivers affected and other private property holders sue the guy. It should be illegal why?
