44th anniversary of Kent State shooting: victims and students remember May 4th, 1970 shooting

KENT, Ohio - A large crowd gathered just after 11 p.m. Saturday behind the Taylor Hall at Kent State University to honor the fallen. The crowd stood near the Victory Bell holding candles in remembrance of May 4th, 1970.

It was 44 years ago that four students were killed after 67 shots were fired in 13 seconds by the National Guard.

The students were pushed over to the parking lot of Prentice Hall as they were protesting the Vietnam War.

Students and volunteers are still standing in the parking lot area where the four students died. The students will stand there for 12 hours honoring the victims in the very spot where they were shot and killed.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, a forum was held where survivors answered questions and spoke about the day they will never forget.

"To me, May 4th means life, but it also means death and murder," said Dean Kahler, who was shot and will never walk again.

Yes. During the court case my Uncle revealed that the ROTC Building was set ablaze by local high school students. I don’t have a link, and I believe him. It was his only daughter.

Well, I heard the same thing from a friend who retired from the US Army as a colonel.

For the life of me I wish I could recall his source for the information that a number of radicals had opened fire on the national guard. I think one of his friends was involved with the NG at the time.

Really wish I could recall as I was shocked to hear this bit of information. Had never heard such a thing mentioned.

It was shot down without evidence in the hearing, per my Uncle. That was probably a bad choice of words.

That girl grew up in the next town from me.

She was an innocent casualty in a ****ed up media frenzy.
If I remember correctly she was all the way over on Water St.

Yep. She was a sweetheart in hindsight, watching a bunch of us bratty pubescent boys (3). My Father was hospitalized at the VA for seven months. She filled in when she could to help out my Mother.

Her Father became a bit of a leftist afterwards, but I could never judge him for it. It destroyed her family.

I was in New York several days later and watched from 20 stories up in a hotel as a few thousand protestors made their way to Times Square carrying four mock coffins.

I was in VietNam in 1969, on campus (U of MD) in 70-71, and in the MD National Guard in the ‘70s. And I worked in D.C. in 71 -72. The protests continued, and continued to turn into riots. Indeed, as the War wound down, the radicals got more violent; more desperate as they lost popular support. Bill Ayers and that bunch didn't start talking about putting 25 million recalcitrant ‘capitalists’ in ‘reeducation camps’ until the late 70’s early 80s.

For a while in the first half of the 1970’s, we packed our gear for riot duty every Spring. It was an annual rite of Spring.

“Yes. It also helped in large part for us to lose the war.”

The U.S. combat operations in the Vietnam Conflict succeeded in its objective to defeat the Communist offensives against South Vietnam long enough for the South Vietnamese to take the responsibility for their own defense. The Democratic Party, their Communist supporters, and a part of the Establishment Republicans reneged on their formal agreement with South Vietnam to provide the air campaign needed to once again defeat another major ground offensive in the event the North Vietnamese breached the ceasefire agreement to conquer South Vietnam.

You didn’t happen to guard people during the 1971 Mayday demonstrations in Washington D.C. and the surrounding area, did you?

If you have any evidence that the students were armed and fired on the guardsmen please give it.

Who shot first?

More like who shot only....

Did protestors burn the loot and set fire to ROTC building....yes

Did protestors throw tear gas cannisters back....yes

Stones and pieces of brick....check

Did protestors refuse to disburse...yes

Were outside agitators there....SDS....SNVCC....freedom rider types...likely

The guard opened up in them.....unarmed with anything but rocks and parts of brick....

13 seconds of firing about 70 rounds of mostly .30-06

Wounded 9 and killed 4......several casualties were walking to class with nothing to do with protests and one was a 71 year old bystander

I was 13 then and Jackson State riots which were violent with rioters shooting happened near where I live

If Freepers think govt forces firing on unarmed protesters pell mell regardless the politics is cool

Count me out

Many a Harry Reid or Eric Holder type progressive would love to see such power unleashed on us to wipe us out once and for all

I can’t believe the bullshit I see spewed here sometimes.....there are times live fire is warranted.....this was not one..

“One of the worst parts of it for them were the girls at Kent State who would bare their breasts and more in order to titillate and mock these young men”

Well if that doesn’t justify a volley of Garand fire, what would?/

Shoot women for baring breasts and taunting the sexually frustrated....sexually frustrated means about any male over 12

Nuts

Our govt mowing down unarmed citizenry barebreasted or not is inexcusable and hardly a hallmark of a constitutional republic whether we detest what the protestors stood for or not.

You think Ohio is bad....try living with Southern Man or Alabama for 40 plus years

Even more grating on my nerves
