GILFORD, N.H. – The New Hampshire father who was disgusted with school officials for assigning a sexually explicit novel to his 14-year-old daughter was arrested at Monday night’s school board meeting and charged with disorderly conduct. Unionleader.com reports William Baer was arrested and taken away in handcuffs from the meeting “because he would not stop protesting” the district’s policy of assigning “Nineteen Minutes” by Jodi Picoult to its 9th grade English students.
In a previous interview with EAGnews, Baer described portions of the novel as “pornography” and said he was appalled that Gilford High School officials assigned the book without giving parents any notice of what was in it – or giving them a chance to opt their children out of the assignment.
Gilford school officials say Picoult’s novel – which tells the story of a school shooting and how it impacts various individuals – has been part of the curriculum since 2007. Gilford officials say that parents are normally notified of the book’s controversial nature before it is assigned, and acknowledge they failed to do so this year.
Before Baer addressed the board on Monday evening, he was told he had two minutes to speak. Unionleader.com reports that Baer “went beyond that time and sat down, but then got into an argument with another parent who approved of the book at the high school.”
Baer asked board members what “the remedy” should be, but “the board said it would not take questions on the matter,” UnionLeader.com adds.
Baer was then approached by a police officer.
“You are going to arrest me because I violated the two-minute rule?” Baer asked. “I guess you are going to have to arrest me.”

The father should bring criminal charges for providing pornographic materials to a minor to this whole school board and the organization responsible for adding this book to the curriculum.
So you can’t draw a picture of a gun, point your finger and say bang, or even wear a US flag on Cinco De Mayo but you can be assigned a smutty book about a fictional school shooting as a class assignment?
Down is up. Wrong is right.
Only Rhode Island and Massachusetts place significant (but not impermeable) barriers to homeschooling.
I suggest parents go to HSLDA.org and investigate homeschooling their kids.
With the advent of ONLINE classes and the growth rate of homeschooling taking off in this nation, you CAN do it, and it is oh so worth the time and effort.
Schools believe they are above parents and that decency laws do not apply to them
Decency is what they say it is - if its perverted, then its decent to most school systems.
Unless the Father is a district attorney he can’t bring criminal charges against anyone. What he can do is start a civil rights suit against the police department for deprivation of rights under the color of law. Civil rights suits can get downright scary for the budget of a town.

As parents that did it way back when (the kid is 30 yo now), I will testify to that. Given our daughter's abilities and personality, home schooling probably saved her life.
When she met her counselor at college (2000) his first comment was "I love home schooled students".
Looking back, based on how she matured and where she is now, it was one of the wisest decisions we ever made as parents. And it was an amazing learning experience for all three of us.

Baer’s a hero to all caring parents - hope he gets the charges dropped and the cop suspended/fired. The First Amendment is the First Amendment, period.
They are both classics of their genre, are they not?
What really burns me is NOBODY there even tried to help him...not so much as a peep.
Most either looked away or pretended it wasn’t happening.

I haven’t read it but, from what I read from these people is it touches on homosexuality, teen sex, abortion, uncaring parents and teachers blind to bulling.

Small town councils and school boards are getting arrogant and wielding unusual powers to shut the tax paying public up, and they learn this from the criminals who are destroying this country
