HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A Hampton police officer shot an aggressive dog Friday while responding to a call about a stolen moped.

According to the Hampton Police Division, the officer responded to the 1200 block of Pansy Street around 9 p.m.

The person who called about the moped was walking with his unleashed dog toward the officer. Police said that’s when the dog aggressively charged at the officer, who feared for his safety and shot the dog once in the upper body.

The medium-sized mixed breed dog was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment.

The officer was not hurt.

The dog’s owner was issued a summons for failure to secure a canine license.

Hampton Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Means Fishing-guy’s dog is fair game in his back yard.
A quick call should remedy that situation.

I hate your stupid world. I hate that you just roll over and play dead like a good little puppy.

There is no situation that the presence of a cop will not make worse.

DO NOT REPORT ANYTHING STOLEN TO THE POLICE. THEY ARE LIKELY TO KILL YOU, YOUR DOG, OR A RELATIVE.

Owner, wrong. Cop, right.

Sorry to disagree with you but nobody was right in this situation. And whose definition of aggressive are we going by? I have seen many dogs that are aggressively friendly. The owner was wrong to put his dog in jeopardy by having it off leash, and until there is some more evidence I will stick with cop was just another pussy.

Cool story, bro.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Here, let me share with you in return.

Reality is reality, and it doesn’t matter if you hate it or not.

I do not roll over and play dead ever.

What I do is take measures that will help protect my dog from trigger happy cops, which I smartly know exist, and I also smartly know that they will shoot without hesitation my unleashed dog.

The reason I do this is because I want my dog to live as she provides me joy and companionship.

It’s called not being a stupid and irresponsible dog owner in a stupid world.

A few weeks back a neighbor and I were walking our dogs off leash in a field. The neighbor’s dog is young and undisciplined - she took off to greet a police officer getting out of his car and my dog followed.

The officer heard the thunder of running feet, turned and saw two dogs charging into his space and started unfastening his weapon.

I was thinking oh, s-— as soon as I saw the cop, but I had a whistle and blew it it - my dog stopped and the other dog didn’t actually jump on the cop - he saw me and my neighbor and kept his hand on his gun - I got my dog on leash and the cop went into the building.

A few minutes later he came out - was actually quite nice - didn’t yell at us or cite us for off-leash - just said he heard them first and thought they were wild, and they got his adrenaline up for the morning.

(Mine is a 60 lb lab-Shepherd mix and the neighbor’s dog is a skinny yellow thing about 40 - neither in scary mode when they approached the officer.)

But NJ is a state where very few people are licensed to carry, and the police don’t want them to carry either. That means the rest of us citizens deal with dogs without pulling weapons. And to me, that means the police should be expected to deal with them the same way.

If I ever have to call the police my dog is going in the crate first - she barks and looks frightening when strange men come on the property but is a complete sweetheart off her territory and on, after introductions have been made.

Ah, I don't know where you live but where I am a dog only has to be leashed in an unfenced yard or out in most public spaces. And there are plenty of reports of police going into fenced yards and shooting peoples dogs whether or not they were leashed. In other words they still killed the dogs of responsible dog owners. Laws are for the little people not cops. Ok there are a lot of good cops out there but the percentage of maniac cops seems to be rising at an alarming rate.

It’s called rolling over and playing dead. Maybe that’s better then licking boots but I’m not sure.

The officer responded on the 1200 block of Pansy St. around 9 o’clock.
Isn’t Pansy St. where the _resident resides with Reggie Love?

Those cops that do that should be charged with felony animal cruelty, and should face long prison sentences and be subject to suit by the family whose family member they just killed.

I have no love for them whatsoever, and if they ever did that to my dog, I may be the one facing a long prison sentence.

Absolutely. But isn't that always a symptom of a society that can not police itself. No impulse control. No common sense. No ability to think cause and effect.

Just shut up, man.

Sometimes, even being in a crate won’t save your dog.

Don’t call cops.

Ever.

Leash your dog. Not only is it law in VA cities and towns, it’s good sense.

“Unleashed dogs are fair game?”

There are leash laws here in VA. Why take an unnecessary chance on your dog’s life?
