Thanks to the National Rifle Association and its lapdogs in Congress, Americans may possess semiautomatic rifles and other firearms designed to kill humans in offensive mode; that is, they are not just for self-defense.

I don’t think the term “well-regulated” meant government controlled. Rather, a well-regulated militia is something beyond a ragtag assemblage of individuals but instead one that has enough experience and skill that it can be mustered into a combat unit of whatever size (squad, platoon or company) to ensure the security of a free state.

That's correct. When I was a kid there was a clock in the school office which was named the "Regulator", because it was designed to do its job well, not because anybody actually expected the clock to be in control.

A good rifleman on a lever action can lay down some dang effective fire. Levers are also very reliable.

That said, people should be able to get whatever they fancy. I have levers, I have semi-auto, I like to mix it up sometimes when I’m out shooting.

On a side note, I was pumping out surplus .308 in my robinson arms this morning and it was actually performing quite well. I can consistently hit little 4 inch clay discs at 200 yards with that ammo.

The idjit wrote about Washington using troops to quell the Whiskey rebellion. He seems to forget about a little insurrection called the revolution. Seems like Geo. Washington had a small part in that.

No one mentioned that Washington made a lot of money running stills making whiskey. Just saying.

If it’s true that “assault weapons” are “weapons of war” and don’t belong on the streets of America, why do the police need them? Who are the police at war with?

You haven't been paying attention. When a modern sporting rifle is in possession of the police, the rifle becomes a "patrol" rifle.

The second a citizen touches a "patrol" rifle, it instantly transforms into an evil, 1000 round a minute, high powered, bullet spewing, assault weapon killing machine.

In the 1970s, anti-gun script writers were claiming the Miller Decision by the SCOTUS proved RIFLES were protected under the 2nd Amendment but handguns were not.

Lots of TV shows at that time parroted that thought.

Now, suddenly rifles are BAD, but we knew it was coming.

At Plevna, the Turks cut the Russians to pieces with Winchester 1866 .44 rimfire rifles. The Russians then starved the Turks out rather than face that firepower.

In WWII, The Germans thought they were under machine gun attacks when the British opened up on them with their .303 Enfield bolt action rifles.

Yes. Whatever the anti-gunners think they CAN ban is what SHOULD be banned.

The recent Peruta decision from the Ninth Circuit poses an interesting question.

The decision notes that Kalifornia has outlawed open carry and thus is expressing a preference for concealed carry. Thus the local law enforcement must accept "self defense" as GOOD CAUSE to issue a permit to carry concealed.

The dissenting judge in that case rightfully points out that there is no level of infringement of the Second Amendment which transform an unprotected activity into a protected activity.

This is actually a very astute observation.

The fact is that rifles and other long guns CANNOT be concealed. To accept the Peruta decision, without some further mention of how the bearing of long guns is protected, is to suggest that our Founders intended that the bearing of rifles could be banned by the government.

That is absolute nonsense.

The good news is that the anti-gunners will NEVER agree willingly to allow open carry of firearms. Once such open carry is clearly included in the right to keep and bear arms, the anti-gunners will BEG for a "shall-issue" concealed carry law in order to make open carry less acceptable even though such carry is protected.

Scroll just a bit farther until the headline that reads, “Officer shoots aggressive dog in Hampton.”

Armed citizens aren’t the problem, Bruce. Because you’ve chosen to be mentally disarmed is no reason to impose idiocy on others.

It's not an article. It's just a Letter to the Editor. It classes with semi-news, semi-satire. Bruce has a right to his opinion. Actually, downtown Lakeland is a good place to carry concealed.

BTW, maybe Bruce is dismayed with the NRA because Lakeland has a really fine, active, well-organized gun club.

Lever action and pump action have been around a while. Semi autos are not that much faster.

For carefully aimed shots. But maybe you've never seen a 11-man rifle squad lay down a base of fire with M1 smoking-hot Garands for another squad to maneuver into position to cover the shooters. It's pure hell to be on the other end, man.
