APNewsBreak: WNBA to Market to LGBT Community
AP ^ | May 21, 2014 | DOUG FEINBERG

Amid a surge of public opinion in favor of gay rights in the U.S., the WNBA is launching a campaign to market the league to the LGBT community, becoming the first pro sports league to specifically recruit gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender fans to its games.

With the marketing campaign, the WNBA is capitalizing on what it has known for years: The community makes up a significant portion of its fan base. The difference now is that the league is talking about it publicly and making it a deliberate part of its marketing strategy.

The launch of the effort coincides with a surge of political and legal advances for the gay-rights movement in the U.S., and shifting public opinion behind many of those advances.

Several years ago the Women’s Basketball Coach of Penn State University, Rene Portland, was run out of a job because she would not recruit gay players. Look what happened after she left!

Rene was a decent lady. I heard parents say that their daughters felt safe on her team. But you know how the liberals are a corps of intolerant people claiming they’re tolerant as they spread their societal poison.

If anyone knows how to get hold of Rene, please FRMail me.

I dunno. Billy did a good job with the Detroit women. I did not go to a game but was mildly interested. Those women were good.

I predict one of the major pro sports leagues will have a homosexual appreciation day and all players will be forced to wear a rainbow (or some other representation) on their jerseys. But I wouldn’t be too shocked if the WNBA does it and gets publicity from networks that normally don’t cover the league.

I recall when this was an issue on the LPGA.

Boy, is that a dumb, shortsighted business move. Now that this campaign has been declared, most other people will think twice before attending games for fear people might think they are into homosexual behaviors. Won’t it be just ducky when the entire audience will be a sight the rest of the population would rather not be part of. The silly owners are stigmatizing all those nice stadiums.

They recruit lesbians. They should be marketing to them.

Larry the Cable Guy was in a fish processing place and said “It smells like halftime in the locker room at a WNBA basketball game.” That was funny!

Really!!! I think this is old news. They are just using the new speak system that has been pushed in the last few years.

Are male reporters allowed in WNBA dressing rooms? Equal access. ESPN, to this day, often mentions how female reporters go inside mens’ dressing rooms.

Nope. Never have been.

Market to .5% of the population. And most of them probably don’t even like sports. They’re all about Broadway musicals and what not.

It’s very popular in Holland, where they watch it on top of their dykes.

Uh, I think that they already DO market to homosexuals.

That is why their market is so, so, tiny.
