Can Republicans expand their reach in blue states? Oregon Senate race provides a test.
Washington Post ^ | 06/02/2014 | Philip Rucker

PORTLAND, Ore. — To Republicans, the Senate race in this solidly Democratic state presents an alluring opportunity. Oregon’s health insurance exchange has been one of the country’s most troubled. President Obama’s approval rating has fallen below 50 percent. Sen. Jeff Merkley, a liberal Democrat first elected on Obama’s coattails in 2008, is not terribly well known.

And in Monica Wehby, Republicans have a fresh-faced, female challenger who they believe matches the moment: a pediatric neurosurgeon and political outsider who rails against the Affordable Care Act but is relatively moderate on social issues.

Republicans don’t need Oregon in order to win back the Senate this year. But they do need to make inroads in blue states such as this one to compete for the White House in 2016. To expand its reach beyond older white men in the Deep South and the Midwest, the GOP must persuade voters to switch sides for candidates like Wehby.

“Unless we conservatives learn how to compete and start winning in swing and blue states, we will never govern America,” said Mike Murphy, a veteran Republican strategist.

Mathematically, Republicans can pick up the six seats they need to gain control of the Senate by winning only in states that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney carried in 2012. Still, they are trying to expand the playing field to include seven states Obama won: Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Oregon and Virginia.

Folks, we need to crawl before we run.

If we get an R irrespective of lightness, elected in Oregon, our country has a hint of a chance.

The perfect is the enemy of the good. Had people realized that we would have won the WH in 2012 and obozocare would be a skidmark.

Better, an obozocare supporting communist win the seat.

Much better.

Look how that is working in NYC. Freaking wonderful.

Is abortion and gun control part of the Republican party platform now?

Abortion isn't a personal choice, it's murder.

She supports amnesty, too.

Glad to see she supports the 2nd. I wonder if she means it?

It is spelled O R E G O N.

But you purists would rather give the seats to the extreme leftists rather than taint your purity.

Thanks for 2012 and obozocare. Good work.

“She supports Obamacare”

That’s not what this says:

So you support Obamacare, amnesty, and abortion? You must, if you support her.

Are socialized medicine, amnesty and abortion part of the Republican party platform now?

RE: She supports amnesty, too.

Not sure about that.

Monica Wehby on immigration...

* Secure the border but increase H1B visas & guest workers. (Mar 2014)

SOURCE: http://www.ontheissues.org/International/Monica_Wehby_Immigration.htm

Dr. Monica Wehby believes that before we make any reforms to our immigration system that we must secure the border.

Border security must be the immediate priority. Monica is also against amnesty for those who came here illegally. That simply isn’t fair to the people who came here through the proper channels.

Dr. Monica Wehby also believes that we need to increase the amount of H1B visas for skilled workers. It doesn’t make any sense to train and educate these workers in the U.S. and then force them to take the skills they learned here to another country.

Dr. Monica Wehby also believes we should work with Oregon’s agriculturists to develop a temporary guest worker program that works.

She said that obamacare can't be repealed.

She's been pretty two-faced on a lot of her positions. Like she a liar, or something.

We’ve got a decent candidate in the race for Carl Levin’s seat. She seems to be staying one step ahead of the democrats on the issues as well. Perfect timing with this one.

None of those things.

But, in endorsing her opposition, you support all that AND pure Communism. Much better. If there is a viable candidate in that race who meets your purity test (which Reagan would have failed), by all means tell us his/her name.

You have to crawl before you walk, much less run. It is better to win the seat with someone who is .00001% to the right of the other candidate. But that thinking is for people who can discern.

Did I thank you for obozocare? Thanks again.

>>Not sure about that.<<

it is pointless to argue with purists.

They would rather concede a seat to the extreme left than endorse a candidate who fall short of the Conservative Purity Test (which Reagan could never pass).

That thinking led to the disaster in 2008 and resulted in the wreckage of 2012.

So long as Purity runs Conservative thinking AFTER the primaries, we will be dominated by leftists communists.

Because the super evil is better than the hold-your-nose not so bad.
