rival, Shak Hill, conceded the nomination to Gillespie. The low attendance — 4,200 delegates
had registered but about 2,700 came to Roanoke — may have expedited the balloting.
Ed Gillespie, a fixture in national Republican politics, easily won his party’s nomination Saturday to take on Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., setting up a marquee fight with control of the Senate at stake.
At 2:50 p.m., less than 90 minutes after voting began at the state Republican convention, Gillespie’s nearest rival, Shak Hill, conceded the nomination to Gillespie.
“I am so honored and I accept your nomination,” Gillespie told about 2,700 delegates at the Roanoke Civic Center. He said of Hill’s concession: “It is a very gracious step towards unifying our party.”
Before the delegates began voting, Gillespie, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, told the crowd that taking control of the Senate could ride on the Virginia outcome.
“We know that this Virginia Senate race will have a national impact,” he told delegates, who chanted: “We want Ed.”
“It won’t just mean that Warner will become the former senator from Virginia, it also means that Harry Reid will become the former Senate majority leader.”
Gillespie’s nomination victory over three rivals, which hardly surprised political observers, is a step in the GOP’s push to retake control of the Senate.
Democrats now hold 55 of the 100 seats, including two independents who caucus with the party. Control of the chamber is in question, with Democrats defending 21 of the 36 seats that are

Some Freeper on another thread told me of GOP-e plants on FR, I’m starting to believe it..
My position is that if you vote for a liberal republican, you are a liberal.
Any candidate that has a record of being pro-life, pro-2nd amendment, against amnesty, against socialized medicine, and for a smaller government can get my vote.
The liberal GOP-E don't seem to run many of those any more.

You named 5 issues. What if a GOP candidate is 4/5 and the Dem candidate is 0/5? What if the GOP candidate is 3/5 and the Dem is 0/5?
Elections are win/lose and there is no close. Your vote alone cancels out a Dem vote (a something not perfect vote is better than a worse vote). Second place by a vote is a loss and you get nothing. Here watch this:

These holier-than-thou positions are childish and immature. We need to work the long game and you get there by winning now. You look at every conservative state and you win there. You can make the House much more conservative than it naturally would be because of urban Democrat jerrymandering and you keep tightening the noose.
This is the Internet Age and it’s harder and harder to keep people ignorant of the shenanigans. We just force a Dem Governor, a Dem Senate and a Dem House to allow a tax cut to expire and not pass any new “revenue sources”. We can checkmate them and win. Voters are tired of the same old, same old.
So here we are, right at a massive change in political thought something like FDRs time or the late 60s. People order from Amazon and it’s there in 2 days. People can return products for nearly any reason. Consumers get what they want from the free market, but politics is still 19th century and government services as well.
It’s over for big government. People won’t tolerate junk and failure. They want solutions and they want them to work. The economy is coming back, despite Obama’s best efforts. Let Congress push out his most egregious efforts and the economy booms.
Put money in people’s pockets and keep putting it there and they don’t care about all your other “too conservative” policies. Careful, thoughtful change is what the voter wants, along with a growing economy. We’ll get that starting late this year. The economy will grow at 2.5%+ for 2014 and get better going forward with a GOP Congress.
The Presidential for 2016 is critical. An aggressive pro-market GOP ticket focused mainly on economic issues will win. Let Congress right the rules and tighten the noose on the Leviathan, return power and the balance of power to the states, use the Commerce Clause to break state mandated monopolies as restraints of trade and the economy picks up to 3-4%+ without inflation.
Then we hold Congress for a generation or more as Millenials grow up with GOP prosperity and conservative values. That’s the potential future. Those that take their ball and go home are foolish.
I’m with you. It’s best to beat Democrats.

I want to sweep the Senate in 2014. I want Mark Warner to go away. But in the bargain, I want a conservative majority leader — NOT Mitch.
I already voted for Dave Brat absentee. I want a new House majority leader, too.
He might say he will work to fight Obamacare now but he was quoted in the past that he supported it. Imo he will not fight Obamacare
I hope he gets the chance to try. Lord knows, Mark Warner will rubber stamp anything Obama wants.

I agree with you, but there are some lost causes here on FR.
Even if Gillespie was a Conservative, he still has almost no chance.
37% of Virginia is non-white.
And, a huge bloc of white voters near the Beltway are Federal employees.
Gillespie needs two things to win:
(1) 65% of white voters statewide - very hard to get.
(2) Very low non-white voter turn out - possible - but Democrats are totally focused nationally on turning out their base, so, 50-50 chance.

The plants have been here for some time. They are easy to spot.
Nobody wanted to go up against Warner. Remember, Warner was the only Democratic Governor in recent memory to cut taxes. Most of the other possibles are waiting to take on Tim Kaine, who is known to be easier to beat. Also, the Tea Party is busy trying to take out Eric Cantor.
