Insurgents seize Iraqi city of Mosul as troops flee

BEIRUT — Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraq’s teetering stability.

Fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, overran the entire western bank of the city overnight after Iraqi soldiers and police apparently fled their posts, in some instances discarding their uniforms as they sought to escape the advance of the militants.

In Baghdad, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced a “general mobilization” and asked parliament to declare a state of emergency, saying the government would not allow the area to fall “under the shadows of terror and terrorists.”

Iraq’s speaker of parliament, Osama Nujaifi, said Mosul, Iraq’s third-largest city and the effective capital of northern Iraq, is now entirely in insurgent hands.

“When the battle got tough in the city of Mosul, the troops dropped their weapons and abandoned their posts, making it an easy prey for the terrorists,” he told a televised news conference in Baghdad.

All key facilities are now controlled by the insurgents, including the airport and the prisons, said Nujaifi, who is from Mosul.

“...the terrorists that the US is arming in Syria are working with the terrorists in Iraq ...”
**********************************************************************

President Obama was “as mad as hell” when he read in the papers that the US is arming terrorists!!

Keep in mind the following:

* Soetoro, now posing as “Obama,” has helped Pakistan as much as possible.

* Soetoro’s first homo “wife” at Haaaavud was from Pakistan.

* Soetoro and wifey secretly disappeared while in Pakistan for many months.

* Pakistan already has the A-Bomb.

* The territorial joining of the “Poppies of Afghanistan” and the Plutonium of Pakistan” will pose an interesting challenge to “The Plan of Iran.”

They liked wearing the outfit and collecting the paycheck until they realized the job came with other responsibilities. Reminds me of some Guardsmen during the run up to Desert Storm.

"Whaaaat??? We've gotta fight too? But I'm a conscientious objector."

Al Qaeda in Iraq. The Taliban in Pakistan. Maybe Obama can release some more terrorists.

The Democrats hitched their wagon to Obama and he has pulled them over a cliff.
EVERY terrorist operation from now belongs to the Democrat Party.

Makes you wish Saddam was back in charge.

He was a double edged sword — ran Iraq as any Muslim state should be run and he kept Iran in check.

Can someone please explain why we ever went to that hellhole to begin with??? I cant see a single thing there worth American lives!! What a foolish waste of lives/treasure... :(

Visit the Iraqi Kurdistan Region some time then and talk to the Kurds. I have. It was worth it just as much as the blood and fortune we spent when we liberated France was worth it.

I just pray that the KRG and Peshmerga can keep these lunatics out of their relatively peaceful territory and my friends there stay safe. Mosul is dangerously close to Iraqi Kurdistan.

Only until the media and the rats figure out how to blame it on a Republican.

Actually, you’re right...PKK (Kurdistan Worker’s Party) is a Marxist/Leninist group.

Ocalan, the currently-jailed leader, once referred to himself as “...the Lenin of the 21st Century.”

The best argument I knew of at the time was that Saddam was trying to acquire nuclear weapons. There were experts (including Clintonistas) who believed that was a real likelihood. That may be part of the reason the Left put so much emphasis on the whole Valerie Plame/Joe Wilson dog and pony show. Of course there is no way now to know if Saddam would have succeeded.

The army guys who ran were probably Sunnis who didn’t want to fight fellow Sunnis. Putting in Shiite forces might fix that, but might start a civil war.
