Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl may be owed up to $200,00 in back pay and benefits for his time in captivity.

Army regulations stipulate that he is entitled to his salary of roughly $1,400 a month for his deployment, plus benefits such as housing allowance and hostile-fire pay.

The American people still wouldn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

Wow — he has hit on a new get rich quick scheme.

Join the army — defect — get the enemy to house and feed you for a few years — and then come back and collect back pay with bennies no doubt.

Deduct it from the money spent trying to find his deserter ass.

It should only take him a few hundred years busting rocks to pay off the remainder.

He hasn’t been courts martialed yet. There is still the presumption of innocence even with a deserter.

WHY does he “deserve his pay” if he deserted?

Since when do we pay people who walk off their jobs?

He should be fined the cost of his rescue and jailed for the deaths he’s caused.

He deserted his post, that is not in doubt, nor is it even in question.
He should not even be getting a faint HINT of back pay for that.

there the small detail of a courts martial, of charges being laid, and of a conviction being obtained.

I had thought I read that several years ago, a military investigation concluded that he was NOT a POW, or maybe I’m recalling what I read incorrectly.

It may not be in doubt, but he has not been convicted. The courts martial may very well order that he surrender all back pay, but until then we STILL have a presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Or would you like to change that and force people to prove their innocence?

Not what I’m saying.
Point is: several soldiers got dragged through the mud for supposedly ‘murdering’ civilians and there was really NO presumption of innocence under UCMJ for them.
So why should it be any different for this clown?
Either apply the stupid equally, or not at all.

He better use every penny to hide well. There isn’t a military member anywhere in the world that does NOT understand the words DESERTER or DEFECTOR.

NOT ONE. NOT ANYWHERE.

Does this include his Combat Pay for the entire time?

I'll bet it does.

Yes.

And I’d hold his pay until all that’s revolved. I have to assume he’s under arrest at this moment. Desertion in the field is a serious military crime. He didn’t just go AWOL.

No. $97 in 1968 to today is $666 per month. $1400 per month is double that.
