On June 6, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) announced the receipt of the fifth largest donation in its history $25 million from Charles and David Koch.
Had the money come from any other source, we would have smiley faces all around. But because the Koch brothers have been so relentlessly demonized by defenders of the mega-state (Harry Reid denounces them as un-American on the Senate floor; others use language much worse than that), the gift has led to spasms of outrage.
As we read in the Inside Higher Education story about the Koch gift, Koch haters let fly at UNCF. One person fumed that UNCF had literally sold its soul to the Devil. (How about a grant to UNCF or some other group to combat the misuse of the word literally?) Another declared that by accepting the funds, UNCF tells children that money comes first and integrity is unnecessary.
University of Pennsylvania professor Marybeth Gasman argued that UNCF should reject the money because it is tainted with the Koch brothers political advocacy, which she says works to undermine the interests of African Americans and the institutions that support them. The Kochs want to shrink the federal government, but Gasman objects, saying that federal programs built the black middle class.
The notion that government programs have been essential for the upward mobility of African Americans (and other groups) is received wisdom among many academicians like Professor Gasman, but it is mistaken. They look only at the winners from government policies and declare them successful, never seeing the greater number of losers. (This is yet another illustration of Bastiats famous point about seen and unseen consequences of government interventions.)

They could give the money to Richard Pryor and Michael Jackson’s charity...
...the Ignited Negro College Fund.
Guess she didn’t ask anyone that important question,”Does this dress make me look fat?”
When I look at the absolutely massive government and educational coercion in this country for Blacks to adopt a victimization mindset and become socialized parasites, it makes me see Middle Class Blacks who rejected all that soul-rotting crap and went out and made something of themselves as American heroes.
Bill Cosby tried to point that out and he was all but burned at the stake by the “Black Community.”
The Kochs want to shrink the federal government, but Gasman objects, saying that federal programs built the black middle lower, poverty class.
Total and complete FAIL!!!
Liberal’s heads exploding everywhere
$25 mil might buy a few tickets to the train with a destination off the Democrat Plantation. One ticket for a ride off is one too many for the ‘Rats.
Simple answer “no”.
Longer answer “it’s not the dress”.
I may not remember correctly but I believe the Koch brothers have supported the UNCF for years. Not to the tune of $25 million, but support no less.
The Plantation.
Dems have been operating the plantation, in one way or another, for centuries now.
.
Really? I read that a Black middle class was established by segregation laws in which there were black banks, Black hotels. Black restaurants, black doctors all catering to black clients.
DE-segregation in the 1960s destroyed this all of this. I can't prove this as I am not from the south.
Want to know how bad Koch Derangement Syndrome is? There’s an office supply company in Des Moines, Iowa, called Koch Bros (no relation). Yep, they’ve received death threats! Libs just hate for the sake of hating. They don’t even know why or who.
Should have given it to Hillsdale College...
I hope it was ear marked for School Vouchers.
Black “leaders” need to grow the f@#$ up and learn to play the game.
Fat white leftist female. The source of destruction for the Black community.
What this member of the Academented cohort is saying is that had Fedzilla not taken from collective non-Black America and given to Black America, there would have been no middle class Black AMericans.
She be racis!
Ironically, those who object to this donation based on the limited goverment view of the Koch Brothers should also be against ANYONE donating to the UNCF, since every donation represents a diversion of funds away from the government (their preferred source of support) to a non-governmental advocacy group.
I disagree - the UNCF already has the structure in place, and the time of the Koch Brothers and those in their organization is better spent on growing their business rather than admistering their own scholarship fund.
Of course my point about time would also be true about money (i.e. better spent on growing business). But if any firm wants to make that gesture, it’s minimizes the disruption to business growth if they just send money to a reputable organization, and leave it at that.
