The newly elected House majority leader on Sunday defended his conservative record against critics and laid out his agenda for the coming months.
On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) about Tea Party criticism that McCarthy is part of the GOP establishment and not conservative enough.
Check my voting record, check what I believe and look what Ive done, said McCarthy, The point is when they wanted to bail out Wall Street, I said no twice. When they wanted to raise taxes, I said I always said no.
McCarthy said he was willing to talk about a possible path to legalization on immigration only after U.S. borders have been secured.
Look at the humanitarian crisis that is happening right now along the border states, he said. These are children from three major countries in central America. They are going across, kids are dying Its because our borders are not secure.
McCarthy also discussed the Highway Trust Fund, which collects money from fuel taxes to support maintenance of the nations highways is expected to become insolvent this summer.
Sens. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) have proposed raising the gas tax to keep the program solvent.
McCarthy said raising taxes is a no-go. Instead, he said the entire program needs to be reformed and federal lands need to be opened for fuel exploration in order to pay for highway construction and maintenance.
And McCarthy spelled out his opposition to the Export-Import Bank, which helps finance American businesses' foreign sales.
While McCarthy supported reauthorizing the bank in 2012, he now says he is for letting the banks authorization expire in September.

Can you say RINO? I knew you could...
He was on with Chris Wallace on Fox Sunday and he said he has consistently voted conservative and will only entertain immigration reform only AFTER the border is secure. Not sure how much of a 180 this is compared with reality but I’m sure I’ll read it here.
And you should have seen the look on McCarthy's face when Wallace threw those percentages at him.
Well, I can dream can't I?
We have, McCarthy. That’s why we oppose you.

With Brat gone because of Amnesty, McCarthy now has a free hand to say whatever he wants, simply because there is NO WAY that enough Republicans will risk their political careers to vote for it.
Cantor had it easy, he hadn’t (yet) voted for Amnesty, he had an unknown opponent who was terribly underfunded, he had huge power and a huge campaign chest. And just to top it off, he had polling showing that the election was going to be a BLOWOUT in his favor, thus ending the Tea Party once and for all.
If Cantor couldn’t win with all that going for him, I’d can only imagine what’s going through the mind of some local House Republican in the middle of Missouri who’s been toying with the idea of voting for Amnesty because Rove offered him a bunch of money and the pollsters ASSURED him that’s what the country wants. In other words, NO WAY.
McCarthy still has his heavily Hispanic district to take care of, and saying what he just said is about as far as he can go on the issue without getting replaced by a Democrat. It’s more important to clean out the House leadership after the November election.
If you ARE CONSERVATIVE, vote like one!!!
What if he gets beat by the Democrat in November? That will be an embarrassment for the GOP-e in losing 2 House Majority leaders in a couple of months. Has that ever happened before?
Tell it to the hand Kev.
Ha I t5hought you were saying that to me as that’s my name.
I won’t argue any of that...I heard about his stunt in California too. But he still has to watch his back if he tries getting cute now - the conservatives are out for blood.
Since it looks like we might be up to 239 House seats after the November election (a gain of 6), I will GLADLY ENJOY letting the Dems have his head and making it 238 seats...still plenty.
What's sad is he thinks he does!
Lucky guess. LOL!!
