Court documents relating to the June 10 murder/suicide at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon, show the gunman stole the AR-15 he used to commit the crime.

He also had a handgun which he had stolen.

President Obama and Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) called for the passage of expanded background checks in the wake of the heinous crime at Reynolds High School. But background checks do not stop thieves.

More proof that universal background checks are not universal and that these gun control proposals are "universal" nonsense. A lot of people fail to grasp the premise underlying our background check system: namely that people who choose to undergo a background check are people who choose to obey the law. Criminals who use illegal means to obtain weapons are not undergoing background checks no matter how many more laws we pass that will not change.

I agree with the premise that background checks do not and have not prevented tragedies like this.

I do wonder where he kept the rifle that it could be so easily stolen? Was he propping open a door with it?

I am paranoid enough that I keep my firearms secure. I would never want to enable a nut-job or a gang banger using a weapon of mine.

You're right. It is folly, utter folly to think that so-called "universal" background checks will be anything of the sort. Straw purchases are already illegal, basically anything involved in transferring a firearm to someone that couldn't pass a background check is already illegal.

Anyone who thinks "universal" background checks will stop illegal firearms transfers - I invite you to consider a "universal prescription" law. Do you think requiring all drug transfers have a doctor's prescription would stop the illegal drug trade? No, of course not. Well, the belief that "universal background checks" will have any similar impact on illegal firearms is exactly the same kind of idiocy.

Why all the hype? The media are treating this like a mass shooting. He killed one, injured one and off’d himself.

If laws worked we wouldn’t have an illegal alien as president.

“I do wonder where he kept the rifle that it could be so easily stolen? Was he propping open a door with it?”

“Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said Padgett “had obtained weapons from home and that they were secured,” but “he defeated the security measures.”

Perhaps a little reading would be advisable.

Remember, the same thing happened with the Newtown shooter as well. His mother kept them secured but he figured out a way to get to them and immediately shot her in the head.

I think it’s because the MSM has been given marching orders by the WH to report and oversensationalize every shooting they can to work the gun control supporter base and move the non-critical / mush headed thinkers / people to that mental state where they will support any gun grabbing measures offered. Just my .02

You raise an excellent point. Poisoning is actually the leading cause of injury death and kills far more children then firearms annually. What’s more, 9 out of 10 poisonings are a result of inhesting drugs and the most frequent culprit is opioid analgesics- mom’s percocets. Seems like if they were really interested in saving children, they would be cracking down on the pharmaceutical industry, not the gun industry.

I keep (kept, before the boat sank) all my firearms in my guns safes with one exception, the one I carry at the time. May GOD help you should I catch you trying to steal any one of them. The coroner will have to come get you.

I saw that.

I still don't know what that means. Secured how? He picked the lock of a gun cabinet? He torched through the safe door? Looked under the bed? He opened a closet and "There it was"?

Many years ago, in one weekend, there were six separate murders in San Francisco. No guns involved.

The mayor immediately called for more gun control.

I’ve heard this statement for years.

That makes me shudder! That is true because liberals see the source of violence as guns instead of people. Hence, the term “gun violence” implying that guns cause violence.

Thus, liberals believe that even when violent acts do not involve guns removing guns would likely have prevented the violence from occurring. And therefore we can eliminate violence by eliminating guns. It is circular thinking removed from reality that is typical of brainwashing.

Not to mention that in the liberal mind set individuals are rarely ever completely responsible for their actions in committing a crime. That is why they always talk about people having a rough childhood, having issues at school or work, etc.
