Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James became “violently ill” during a ride with the storied Thunderbirds aerial acrobatic team this week.
Commanders at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., thought it would be good PR to invite the relatively new secretary for a flight with its most famous squadron. Amid tight defense spending, there is pressure to demonstrate the worth of the Thunderbirds, which is back in the air show business after having been grounded last year when sequestration took hold.
But Tuesday’s F-16 flight did not go as planned in the cockpit for Ms. James, a former House defense staffer, Pentagon official and defense industry executive.
“Someone got the bright idea to invite her on the airplane,” said a source familiar with the incident. “She got violently ill.”

I would love to do the PR ride. I’ve been through the high risk aviation survival training and spent lots of hours in a flight suit on 11 hour “no shit” flights. I have a fixed wing private license with 53 hours on the log. Cancer cut me short on my medical renewal in 1985. 30 years of software engineering have screwed with my eye sight. My ears can handle the rapid pressure changes just fine. The 100% O2 causes your inner ear to suck up overnight as the body takes the O2 with nothing to replace the gas volume.

I have no doubt that making her airsick was the pilot’s way of telling her what he thought about her and her uber-liberal policies.
“I feel safer knowing that our Air Force Secretary is named Debbie.”
And odd that the secretary went, I would have thought her boss would get the invite.
In me defense I hit the wrong switch on a panel that was slightly behind me while my seat belt was locked due to the pilot doing a 3.5 g turn.
I guess it’s better than the acting secretary who was an open homo. He said that his top priority was LBGTQRST service members feel comfortable in the AF.
