Traditionally the piano has a page turner because both his hands are in play at any given time. String players don't have page turners.

In one of the videos I posted last night of the Mendelssohn trio, pianist Adam Neiman doesn't employ a page turner but displays the score on his Tablet instead.

Pedal switch to “turn” the page on the tablet?

Charlie Daniels interprets a similar tale! (Just Jokin’ around with ya, Publius! LOL!)

Maybe. I’ll ask Adam when I see him in a few weeks.

I’m a piano player myself, but casually, such as sometimes for church. Since 100% accurate virtuosity is not needed in such a situation, I usually can get away with attaching little clips to the edges of my pages, which allows a page to be turned in a fraction of a second. (Even then, by timing the turn cleverly, I can often avoid missing any notes.)

The two pieces in fact have a common source. The movie "Crossroads" uses a blues guitar instead of a violin, but it's the same basic tale.

It all goes back to "Doctor Faustus" by Marlowe, and some say that Marlowe stole it from a German language original.

A source on Wikipedia traces a possible origin of the Daniels version to a poem, “The Mountain Whippoorwill,” by Stephen Vincent Benet (the same poet who also wrote about the devil being beaten by Daniel Webster).

Doctor Faustus really got around, Didn’t He?

BTW, “Crossroads” is a favorite movie of mine, and my all-time favorite opera is Gounod’s “Faust”.

There is an alternative to selling one’s soul in order to be a dynamite musician, though.

It’s called “PRACTICE”!

LOL

I and a buddy are working on a sequel to the Daniels song, incidentally. Have NO idea how well it will go over, but it features Jesus 0wning the scene.

My buddy is just bold enough that he would approach Daniels personally... though we might just present a copy to ASCAP for their advice. They’ve liked some of our early collaborations and have asked for more. Me, I am more shy face to face, though I put much boldness into words.
