Thomas Ravenel Says He Will Qualify as an Independent Candidate for U.S. Senate in South Carolina

Thomas Ravenel, a former State Treasurer of South Carolina, says he will submit over 10,000 valid signatures by the July 15 deadline. See this story. If he succeeds, he will be the first independent candidate for U.S. Senate in the history of government-printed ballots.

South Carolina has been one of four states in which there had never been an independent candidate for either Governor or U.S. Senator on a government-printed ballot, but it seems likely that independent candidates for both offices will qualify in that state this year. The other states that have never had an independent candidate for either office are Indiana, New Mexico, and North Carolina.

From the article cited:

Thomas Ravenel – a reality TV star and former Republican state treasurer who was forced to resign from office after being indicted on federal drug charges – announced Friday that he would run as an independent candidate against GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Ravenel made his announcement in an email to reporters, prior to attending a July 4th rally in Greenville, South Carolina.

After stepping down as state treasurer in 2007, Ravenel served 10 months behind bars after he plead guilty to federal drug charges. In his email, Ravenel acknowledged his conviction, writing that “I’m an imperfect messenger.”

The email also said that Ravenel “expected to be attacked over the issue – and was ready to defend himself.”

Ravenel has recently been in the spotlight for being one of the stars last season on the reality TV show “Southern Charm.” Ravenel earned the nickname “T-Rav” on the Bravo series which chronicles the personal and professional lives of six friends who reside in Charleston.

To be replaced by a Dem. Not an improvement - politics is a numbers game, and if we don’t have the numbers, there’s nothing we can do at all.

Ravenel is a self-centered unprincipled idiot who is doing this because he’s a sore loser. I think we’ve already seen his moral scope.

Graham is a dangerous oligarch who should be removed from power one way or the other. The same with McConnell. If they are rewarded with reelection, they will be emboldened and will double their betrayals.

I like Ravanel and from what I've read so far, he seems conservative. Anyone would be better than Linda.

Throwing my support to T-Rav. I will never support the other two dems running. (Hutto and Linda)

”indicted on federal drug charges”…”served 10 months behind bars”… “plead guilty to federal drug charges” “acknowledged his conviction” “I’m an imperfect messenger.”

With a resume like that he sounds like a shoe-in as a Democrat.

“If he succeeds, he will be the first independent candidate for U.S. Senate in the history of government-printed ballots.”

This is the most bogus line ever printed. Maine in 2012 elected an independent (albeit fake democrat) US Senator. We also three other independent (non-party) candidates on the ballot.

2012 Maine US Senate Candidates
Dalton, Danny Francis Brunswick Non-Party
Dill, Cynthia Ann Cape Elizabeth Democrat
Dodge, Andrew Ian Harpswell Independent for Liberty
King, Angus Brunswick Independent for Maine
Summers,Charles E., Jr. Scarborough Republican
Woods, Stephen M.Yarmouth Independent

They were citing an article on a Ballot Access website which the independentpoliticalreport.com website appears to have copied verbatim.

Agree 100%.

The environment has very clearly had a sea change. Hence if they're reelected, lindsey and mcconnell are more likely to see it as a bit of luck than a reward imo.

Irrespective of how they view their potential victories, I prefer a majority in the senate to push back on 0bama.

Yes the question some of have is whether it's better to allow the dems and Harry Reid to continue to control the senate and to continue to protect 0bama's agenda ... or ... take the senate to get harry and the senate out of the way so 0bama's agenda can be better fought but that would mean that the rinos stay another term.

That is the question we shoot each other over, sadly.

It’s too easy for a RAT to declare himself a Libertarian and peel off Rino votes. The honchos of the Rat party have it figured out.

Wow, just like Linda, I think that the voters should send Linda home and Elect a TV star.

What say you?
