Details fill final day before pot stores open in state
The Seattle Times ^ | 7/6/2014 | Evan Bush

With the state set to license a handful of recreational-marijuana stores Monday, retailers have been hustling to set up shop while growers and processors are racing to package pot so it’s ready to deliver Tuesday, when the first stores are expected to open.

Aaron Nelson, the general manager of 2020 Solutions in Bellingham, said his store has already passed inspection by the state Liquor Control Board and hopes to open its doors Tuesday at 8 a.m., the earliest hour allowed under state law.

Nelson expects to have enough marijuana for at least 1,000 people Tuesday, but said 2020 Solutions might limit how much customers can buy, depending on demand. He expects his customers to pay $20 to $25 per gram.

2020 also will sell pre-rolled joints, locally blown glass pipes and other consumption paraphernalia.

But first, the marijuana has to get into the stores.

The Liquor Control Board holds the keys to the launch button. At 1:20 Monday morning, the agency is expected to email the first wave of newly licensed retailers and enter them into its computer system, which traces pot from seedling to a consumer’s hands. Then, retailers can buy marijuana from processors.

On Monday morning, Lynsee Michels, the Director of Nine Point Growth Industries, a grower and processor in Bremerton, will be waiting for phone calls from several retailers that her company has agreed to sell to once they’re officially licensed — including the only Seattle shop, Cannabis City on Fourth Avenue South in Sodo.

“Everything’s been done — dried, trimmed and cured,” she said. “We’re just waiting for those retail stores to be ready to buy.”

Will the State of Washington be providing quality control measures so that the recreational user knows that the pot he/she purchases is of the best quality and that there is a wide array of strain varieties to choose from? What qualifications would these employees from Weights and Measures need to possess? Just thinkin out loud

Okay.....the Stoners make a run on Pot, and they create a protracted shortage. Meanwhile, I’ll still be buying up every box of 22LR and 22WMR I can find.....

Still waiting for the mournful lamenting wail down the road; “What do you mean ‘Pot gives you cancer?!?’”

Just the thought of one of them attempting to find a radio station while driving is horrifying.

>> legalization is associated with a nearly 9 percent decrease in traffic fatalities, most likely to due to its impact on alcohol consumption.

Sure it is. /s

You're mind's made up so don't confuse you with the facts?

“most likely due” is not exactly a fact.

I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 10. What is the number?

“most likely due” is not exactly a fact.

It's supported by the linked article: "Finally, the relationship between MMLs and more direct measures of alcohol consumption is examined. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), we find that MMLs are associated with decreases in the number of drinks consumed, especially among 20- through 29-year-olds, providing additional evidence that alcohol is the mechanism by which traffic fatalities are reduced. Using data from the Beer Institute, we find that beer sales fall after a MML comes into effect, suggesting that marijuana substitutes for beer, the most popular alcoholic beverage among young adults."

“Maybe.”

I’ve personally suspected that folks who, given a wider palette of intoxicants, might prefer something different to liquor.

It could make the problem of wanting a fix more obvious. All manner of normal people drink “in moderation.” My dear conservative Baptist friends notwithstanding (and they are actually pretty good with most of their theology) the bible makes a positive role for alcohol, while warning that you can make a big fool out of yourself if you don’t use it the right way, which is to honor God with it. Wine is symbolic of joy. “What God hath joined, let no man put asunder.” Drinking to God is no more an excuse for going on destructive benders than marriage is an excuse for sexual perversions. And if pot is to be smoked, it should only be smoked unto God. Never unto demons. Medicinal use would count; I cannot speculate if any other would, not having known about it.

I didn’t realize that 10% of the drivers responsible for traffic fatalities were caused by drunk cancer patients.

Or 10% of those who like booze enough to drive drunk decided they were interested enough in switching to pot to fake a pot-treatable condition (e.g., pain or nausea).
