I drove my Mercedes to pick up food stamps
Wash Compost ^ | July 8, 2014 | Darlena Cunha

Sara Bareilles played softly through the surround-sound speakers of my husband’s 2003 Mercedes Kompressor as I sat idling at a light. I’d never been to this church before, but I could see it from where I was, across from an old park, abandoned in the chilly September air. The clouds hung low as I pulled the sleek, pewter machine into the lot. But I wasn’t going to pray or attend services. I was picking up food stamps.

Even then, I couldn’t quite believe it. This wasn’t supposed to happen to people like me.

Ahhh. I see. This story happened in 08. I was thinking she was tooling around to the Welfare Office in an 11 year old Mercedes.

Thanks for correcting me.

It was WIC in 2008. That was probably still coupons.

WIC only went to EBT recently, and it still also uses paper vouchers, like checks, iirc.

WIC does require a nutrition risk analysis.

Something in me is calling BS.

OK, it was WIC in 2009 - they still might have been using the paper ‘checks’.

A blood test may have been given.

BUT - gag me with an effing spoon:

‘No one spoke to me, but they did stare. Mouths agape, the poverty-stricken mothers struggling with infant car seats, paperwork and their toddlers never took their eyes off me, the tall blond girl, walking with purpose on heels from her Mercedes to their grungy den.’ -

Did she make up this story just to be able to writs THAT bit of excrement?

“I drive mine to Wal-Mart and Kroger.”

And then you pay for your own food. And that’s the way it should be.

I drove my Mercedes pickup truck, U1300L (with OM366A turbodiesel) several hundred miles last week to pick up some ham radio antenna sections at Kublos Surplus in Brackney, Pennsylvania.

Got a few other odds and ends, and returned to NH.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. People can “hope” that there will be a free lunch, but it’s not going to happen. Somebody pays. It’s the way of the world. The people who keep promising free lunches are thieves. Actually, they are worse than thieves. Everyone knows socialism doesn’t work, but socialist leaders keep popping up promising free stuff. And the nation slides into emptiness.

Travel to most ghettos and you will find more Mercedes and Caddies than you can imagine. They’re easy to recognize, they have those extra fancy wheels.

I’m not in the market and don’t have a place to keep it anyway.

My next used car if it ever happens will be a replacement 67 Cougar. A few years ago I had one that I bought from my uncle but wound up having to sell. I miss it some.

Wrong - “Food Stamps” is the SNAP card and can basically only be used on items with nutrition labels or produce.

The EBT Card is the welfare card and can be used for anything to include food items.

There’s a ton of both in use at both of the Food Lions I go to - and yes, most folks are driving better cars than my 2007 Ford Focus.

BTW, why were they willing to work at places 100 miles apart from each other in the first place? ESPECIALLY such a lousy commute as Hartford to Boston, and in a time sensitive business!

She specifically mentions handing over food stamp coupons at the checkout, so it seems not. Maybe Connecticut doesn’t use EBTs yet (or a few years ago)?

She also seems to be talking about WIC and Food Stamps interchangeably.

Here in CA the same EBT cards are used for both food stamps (CalFresh out here) and cash benefits.

Because you can cash out what you have tied up in it and deal with your current situation. I had to do this once when laid off while in college (newly married, working full time and paying my own way).

Sold two nicer cars, got one beater, preemptively got out of our apartment lease, downsized my whole world and sent out 100+ pre-internet resumes with the proceeds.

After 15 weeks, I was back in the work force. I didn't qualify for unemployment since I was continuing school and not making myself available 24/7.

This is a story about the car, but it is really a story about how Obama’s policies saved them. At the end, they are now living the good life all because of Obama. Oh, and Conservatives are mean!

What state still hands out stamps anymore?

Many people still refer to the government food give away program as food stamps, despite the fact that it's now done via a debit-like "EBT" (electronic benefits transfer) card.

"... at the end of the piece we learn it's purpose. FU, Darlena."

My sediment exactly. The purpose of the article was to make her feel good about herself, collect a little pity for the misfortune of her children and finally to PRAISE HIM!"

Now hubby is probably back at work for another propaganda tool of the left and she is hoping soon to find herself in a Mary Mapes type roll propagandizing to the low information crowd on a good morning show somewhere.

Well it could be worse.... She could be a blonde and not be able to spell BMW.
