A top Social Democrat politician on Wednesday admitted he took crystal meth, but said he only did it to improve his performance at work.
The apartment of Michael Hartmann, the interior policy expert for the centre-left SPD (Social Democrats), was searched by police last week in a drugs probe.
And on Wednesday the lawyer of the lawmaker from Mainz said his client did buy and consume a small quantity of the drug in autumn 2013.
His lawyer said he used crystal meth for around a month, but was not addicted to the drug. The lawyer said Hartmann had hoped to improve performance at work by taking it.
The 51-year-old had previously spoken out against using cannabis.
Hartmann stepped down as the SPDs parliamentary spokesman for interior affairs after the allegations first came out last week, but he remains a member of parliament.
Police searched his home in Berlin after observing him buying the drug and are now investigating the case.
Uh huh just for a month eh? Open your mouth and let me see your gums...
That’s why I do it too...
That’s often how it starts.
The thing is, it might have actually improved his performance.
He could have taken prescription med Provigil, which does a really good imitation of cocaine. Said to enhance performance at work.
Legal and very expensive (over $100 apiece).
I suppose crystal meth has other “benefits.”
Wonder if he also sniffs ether to help get moving?

I had a work companion, a good family man who took meth to improve his work. It worked so well he lost his job and he is now well employed picking cucumbers at either Tucker or Cummins Prison farms.
Using meth is a much better idea.
They don’t call Adderall the “breakfast of champions” for nothin’
I take beer to lower mine....
I believe that someone will find a way to bring Walter White back to TV...
They already did. He's "Walter Blanco" on Univision's (or Uni Mas's) Metastasis.
The quality is a lot worse than the original, but if you know the original series, the remake isn't that hard to follow.
The premise, though -- mildmannered chemistry teacher discovers he has cancer and starts cooking meth to leave his family money -- doesn't make much sense when it's set in a country already as swimming with drugs as Colombia.
How did I miss that show? I spend most of my quality TV time watching Univision...
I take Provigil because of sleep apnea and trust me, it’s nothing like cocaine. It’s not even as strong as Adderall.
