No, the United States isnt trying to build a military force of centenarians.
It just seems that way after the Selective Service System mistakenly sent notices to more than 14,000 Pennsylvania men born between 1893 and 1897, ordering them to register for the nations military draft and warning that failure to do so is punishable by a fine and imprisonment.
The agency realized the error when it began receiving calls from bewildered relatives last week.
Chuck Huey, 73, of Kingston, said he got a notice addressed to his late grandfather Bert Huey, a World War I veteran who was born in 1894 and died in 1995 at age 100.
I said, Geez, what the hell is this about? It said he was subject to heavy fines and imprisonment if he didnt sign up for the draft board, he said. We were just totally dumbfounded.
Huey said he tried calling the Selective Service but couldnt get a live person on the line. That frustrated him even more because he wanted to make sure the agency knew there had been a mistake.
You just never know. You dont want to mess around with the federal government, he said.
The glitch, it turns out, originated with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation during a transfer of nearly 400,000 records to the Selective Service.

They probably didn’t sign up for Obamacare either.
It’s high time these shirkers should be brought to account for their improprieties! They must serve, too!
Finally, a Y2K disaster!
Completely understandable mixup. I’m sure they’ve been reliably voting for years, even if most of them are dead.
Obvious mistake. They had intended to enroll them as registered Democrats for the 2016 election. Anyone could make a mistake like that.
I thought we had solved the Y2K problem years ago. This is just another manifestation of it.
I don’t buy the story. Why were names transferred from one department to the next. And even if someone made a mistake on dob, how did that lead to letters being sent out to drafting ppl into the military
If they vote then they should have to serve too...
Especially given how they likely vote
The sad thing here, to be honest, is that SS(ha ha) is getting the blame, when really it is the DMV that screwed up. All they do is say “we’re sorry” and no one blames them for their incompetence.
BTW, see the tagline.
One of those notices arrived at my office, addressed to the late, former owner of the building, who sold the building to me in 1991, and died four years later at the age of 102.
A Y1900 disaster.
this made me laugh...
Basically, the Feds get data from DMVs/POs etc. They must be assuming it’s correct. Then they notify based on those data.
The DMV needs to be called out more on the carpet and bear the brunt of the blame. Another example of hidden trouble. One only hears from the Feds, gets angry at them, and doesn’t realize they get their errant data from one’s state.
It’s all government trouble. But in this case, the state really bears the blame.
And don’t make the mistake the windbag commenting on the article did.
They are not “draft notices” - that’s just simplistic terminology.
They are selective service *registration* notices. Everyone must register so the draft can be issued when needed.
Thank God that none of Selective Service’s hard drives were recycled!
Reporting as ordered, sir!
And now we realize the true horrors of Y2K!!!!!
I don’t even begin to understand how this could happen.
So, 14,000 Immortals were born in the 1800s.
