O'Malley: U.S. shouldn't send immigrant children back to 'certain death'

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley advocated for sympathy for the surge of young Central American immigrants flooding the U.S. southern border, arguing that to turn the children away without due process would be un-American given what violence awaits in their home countries.

"We are not a country that should turn children away and send them back to certain death," he told reporters Friday at a National Governors Association meeting in Nashville. ....

O'Malley said the children deserve due process under U.S. law.

"They should have their ability to make their case for protection and asylum in the United States," he said.

"I believe that it is contrary to everything that we stand for as a people to try to summarily send back to death, whether it's in famine; death whether it's in the middle of the ocean; death whether it's in a war torn area or death in a place where gangs are the greatest threat to stability and the rule of law and Democratic institutions in this hemisphere."

Martin O’Malley: Don’t send kids to ‘certain death’ - July 11, 2014 - During a press conference with other Democrats at meeting of the National Governors Association in Nashville, O’Malley insisted the young would-be migrants deserved due process in the immigration system.

“We are not a country that should send children away and send them back to certain death,” he said, adding: “I believe that we should be guided by the greatest power we have as a people, and that is the power of our principles. Through all of our great world religions, we are told that hospitality to strangers is an essential human dignity.”

O’Malley said the facilities housing the children look more like a scene from a “local Humane Society than a humane country.” He called them “kennels” and said the youth should be placed in less restrictive settings, such as with family members or in the foster care system.

He also described the children as being “refugees” from crime-ridden neighborhoods.

We have no indication that this is true.

We already have plenty of those.

certain death??

what??

The UN says they have universal healthcare and all kids are immunized and the first lady of Guatemala even said they were not refugees fleeing violence. Their country is not violent, she said.

Hey Cardinal, get a clue.

Death is always certain. It is just a matter of timing.

Due process? I say they have no standing as illegal aliens. After all, Americans never seem to have standing in our courts these days. Deport immediately when caught.

Baltimore, Maryland, a city in his own state, has a higher murder rate than Guatemala. Sending them to Maryland could be more dangerous and cruel than sending them home.

Are they sending these children to South Chicago or Detroit?

Somehow I think the place they left may be safer than a lot of places here.

Oh for crying out loud, they are not facing certain death, or at least no more than we all are!

You’d think there was a holocaust going on in Central America, but there isn’t. Just the same old crap.

This will be the next lie, that somehow things have gotten so much worse down there.....so much worse that nobody, not even us news junkies ever heard of it.

If a bunch of Venezuelans arrived, I’d believe it, as it is that’s nonsense.

Will this O’Malley (and he is a world class imbecile) be the left-wing challenger to Hillary? Quite frankly I’d think she’d run rings around this guy.

Governor O’Malley is either a kook — or a fool.

Just my opinion.

I read the article and I didn't see any where that O’Malley said..”and please send 10,000 of the unaccompanied youths to Maryland. We'll take care of them. Also, please include about 7,000 or more of the teens.”

Until he says that he is a major hypocrite.

We're sending them back to their parents.

I wish that we had a legitimate media who would ask the Governor of Maryland if he's seriously accusing the presidents of Mexico and Guatemala of presiding over "death" camps.

Where was Hillary Clinton? Where was John Kerry?

How could country-sponsored "certain death" have gone unnoticed in OUR hemisphere until now?

Is this another Rwanda?

Are the Democrats now accusing our neighbors to the south of willful negligence while widespread death is occurring all around them?

And why didn't the media ferret this out? Why is it only now that someone is calling it out?

And how did it come to be that the governor of Maryland is the one who found it out?

If we gave asylum to every kid from a crime ridden neighborhood, we would have billions rushing our borders, landing in our airports and coming in container ships by sea. When is his madness going to stop? We should have governors like O’Malley, who make such stupid comments, taken out of office by whatever means possible.

They aren’t our citizens, they aren’t our concern.
Let their country of origin worry about it.
