The Army wants to retire its supply of 9mm handguns and replace it with a more accurate and user-friendly model that also will provide soldiers with more “knock-down” power.

Army officials say their inventory of more than 200,000 semi-automatic Beretta M9 and Sig Sauer M11 pistols has become outdated, worn out and needs to be replaced with an updated model that also offers more reliability and durability.

I don’t agree with the people claiming the 45 is too much for women. My wife, all 5 ft 4 and 105 lbs of her, loves her S&W 1911 - full size, not a commanders version.

I find the average woman can handle a .40 easily. There is not that much difference in recoil over a 9mm. A .45 would be fine for the average woman with some practice, although personally I prefer the slighly smaller caliber. They all get the job done when used with accuracy....

If I had to guess, I’d say they’re gonna go with a .40 SW or maybe even a more exotic design something like a FN 5.7mm.

It should be noted that Major Nidal Hassan, of Fort Hood Massacre infamy, brought down two charging soldiers with single COM shots using the 5.7mm.

My 15 year old niece weighs 98 pounds. She shoots the M1911A1 like a pro. The M-1 Garand too. She shot my .44 Magnum Blackhawk too.

Tankers also had the grease gun which was same ammo as the 45.Made perfect sense. The only thing that will replace a 45 is another 45.Never a need for a double tap... ever.

However manly you niece is, small people have small hands. I suppose I could man up and shoot a 17” pull, 10 lb., .50 BMG; but that doesn’t make it fit me, or the recoil less punishing.

I’m a 5’10” male, and there are pistols that are too large for my hand. Sure I can make them go bang, but they are still less than ideal. The 1911A1 is the right fit, but I suspect the releases would be easier if I were 6’2”. At 5’1”, it is effectively a 2 handed gun.

10mm may be a good solution. My RIA 10mm is a heck of a gun. The round is the same diameter as a .40 S&W and can be double stacked like a .40 and still keep the grip size relatively small. Also, if the .10mm were selected maybe ammo would be easier to find. Admittedly, Ive never done or read any comparisons between 10mm and .45ACP terminal performance.
