Most Russian truly believe that that the downing of the airliner represents a failed attempt against Putin’s personal plane that was supposedly flying a thousand miles off course over the Donbas.

There no longer is an independent media in Russia. Most people there get their news from TV most of which is literally owned by the Russian government and the rest of which is government controlled. Thus, the Russian public is largely unaware that this is even an issue.
