Ebola outbreak: Is it time to test experimental vaccines?

Ebola virus disease is sweeping across West Africa in the largest outbreak of the virus to date. Mortality rates are currently at 60% in a disease where up to 90% of infected people can die. But despite this lethality there remain no licensed treatments or vaccines available, nearly 40 years after the disease was first discovered.

In March, Ebola was reported for the first time in Guinea, West Africa, in districts that border neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone. This proximity meant that unlike previous outbreaks in other parts of Africa, the usually remote Ebola virus had the opportunity to cross borders. With residents migrating back and forth, it did just that. Four months later the outbreak has reached unprecedented scales, with 1,093 people infected and 660 deaths attributed to the virus.

"This is clearly an outbreak across international borders and it has not been handled properly," explains David Heymann, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), who was on-site at the first human Ebola outbreak in 1976.

He says the 24 known outbreaks of Ebola to date have shown that it should be easily controlled. "It's not rocket science to control these outbreaks but instead basic epidemiology: infection control, hygiene practices, contact-tracing and safe burial practices," says Heymann of the virus, which is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids. "Ebola is its own worst enemy, it's too lethal and cannot sustain its own spread."

But whilst it should be easily contained, this time something has gone wrong

If you read the article, that is the normal protocol. Then it burns itself out. For whatever reason that isn’t/didn’t happen this time.

“For whatever reason”...

I fully believe that Obama et al have intentionally initiated a biological attack on the United States - especially “red” areas.

I used to have an old book I bought back around 1962. THE PLAGUE AND THE FIRE. A history of those plague years. A terrible time to be alive.

[ They need to put the affected victims on a colloidal silver drip. Viruses and bacteria don’t like it one bit. ]

But that could turn them blue.....

[ Could experimental vaccines morph Ebola into something more highly contagious and deadly? ]

Making Ebola (less) deadly would actually cause it to become more widespread, that or increasing the incubation time so it has a chance to spread further, the problem with a highly contagious highly deadly virus is that it will burn itself out quickly.

Only if they chewed on a chunk of silver. Microscopically-suspended particles don't turn anyone blue.

Viruses and bacteria get the heck outta Dodge when confronted with it.

As of a few years ago, basic epidemiology and microbiology were no longer part of Nursing education up through BSN level. Part of the reason MRSA infections are widespread is lack of understanding of how diseases are transmitted.

The Stand’s flu was so effective because it shifted as AIDS does AND it was so highly contagious.

When you hear EBOLA is in your town, hunker down and do not go outside for a couple of weeks.

It burns itself out quite fast.

Of course, people do not use even the most basic hygiene anymore—idiots sneezing all over crowded areas.

If it breaks out in a city between Boston and DC...those folks are screwed.

People these days are so selfish, that they are not going to cooperate with quarantines.

They have *rights* you know, and that means the *right* to do what they want, when they want, everyone else be damned.

What's probably the only thing that's going to work is the healthy people voluntarily quarantining themselves until the outbreak is over.

Unless it gets too bad in the cities and then there could be forced quarantine and martial law.

The medical system is going to be overwhelmed and health care workers are going to be in short supply and high demand as they succumb.

It's not a pretty picture.

That's how I see it anyway.
