The National Rifle Association's top lawyer, who has been instrumental in shaping gun policy in the U.S., was once convicted of murdering a woman in Indiana....

Robert J. Dowlut, general counsel for the NRA, reportedly admitted to police in 1963 that he killed his girlfriend's mother. He was 17 years old at the time. Dowlut reportedly led police to the graveyard where he buried the gun and also copped to attempting to rob a pawnshop the same night as the killing.

Bullets from the gun Dowlut unearthed at the graveyard matched those found at the site of Anna Marie Yocum's murder and at the pawnshop, according to Mother Jones.

A jury found Dowlut guilty of murder, but his conviction was later overturned because of shoddy police work during the investigation....

Obama’s boys are hard at work. I wonder if Josh Ernst, the spokes boy, is the Plastic Man?

My question is how did the police screw up the investigation on this one? That’s really worthy of investigation.

Why would I like 1)an organization that hires a murderer who got off on a ridiculous technicality to a high position or 2)a cheese-eating pro-Islamist surrender monkey?

It’s kinda difficult to get too worked up over this, considering that the guy who singlehandedly launched the political career of B. Hussein Obama was a himself murderous terrorist who never faced justice for his crimes.

There is no statute of limitations on murder, so you know the Democrats are going to jump on this like flies on $hi*

Won't matter. Double Jeopardy applies. A jury found him not guilty. He can't be tried again.

It also begs the question of why the case wasn't re-tried with proper police work.

Probably because the prosecutor didn't think the case was winnable.

Prosecutors make that type of decision all the time.

It’s a classic case of a perp getting off on a ridiculous technicality.

Well, Plastic Man, you might be in a differerent comic book universe than Dr. Sivana, but I don't think this is embarrassing or wrong.

He's one of the NRA's lawyers. He is not the face of the NRA. He is a hirling. If he had been found guilty, he might well have been out of jail 30 years ago. Without the jail, he has kept his nose clean. He got lucky and made the most of it.

He is obviously a skilled and talented attorney, and I would be happy to hire him. With Bill Ayers cackling all over, you are worried about this employee?

Sheesh.

That’s incorrect. The jury found him guilty. The Indiana Supreme Court overturned the conviction and ordered a new trial. He never got a new trial. He likely will now after this story in Mother Jones, which was probably the intent.

This reminds me a bit of the case in which a guy was convicted of armed robbery, sentenced, but was never actually sent to jail because of a clerical error.

All the liberals whined that he had led an exemplary life since his conviction and should not be sent to jail years later.

But this case is different. This guy isn’t a black liberal, so he’s fair game.
