Ebola: UK border staff 'unprepared' says union leader
BBC News ^ | July 31, 2014

Border, immigration and customs staff feel unprepared to deal with people coming to the UK with possible cases of the Ebola virus, a union leader says.

Immigration Service Union (ISU) general secretary Lucy Moreton said her members needed more information on the threat.

But the Border Force has insisted staff have been given guidance on how to identify and deal with suspected cases.

Almost 700 people have died in West Africa since the first case of Ebola was detected in February.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the UK government was taking the current threat to the country "very seriously".

simple. Stop all immigration from mooseslime infested areas.

Don't let the planes unload! Don't let the boats unload. Send them back!

I believe the number of stated dead (700) to be understated. Supposedly closer to 2K. Precise number withheld for obvious reasons. Rural nature of some of these countries also a factor.

100 muslim extremists, voluntarily infected with Ebola would cause far more death and disruption to America, than did 9/11.

England as well. And Europe would be an easy target...

There are a fair number of Christians in western and central Africa which,I believe,is where this is occurring.

My thought for quite awhile. Trade in the suicide vests for biological warfare. I wasn’t sure what disease would be used. Now I know.

If the UK is unprepared, it is going to come in from Europe! A lot of those flights originate in Africa...transfer in the UK or France...and then on to the United States or Canada.

With incubation times of nearly 24 days, looking for “sick” passengers is useless.

If Brits can’t deal with an Ebola epidemic they need to STOP all travel between them and African countries. Refuse entry to people who have traveled to Africa then attempted to come back through a 3rd country.

If the epidemic takes hold in modern cities with high rise buildings we won’t be able to stop it.

That might not be a bad idea really.

Looks like MSF was right. It’s out of control over there. Several provinces on that map that weren’t there 3 or 4 days ago.

More foreign NGO medical teams are pulling staff and evacuating families.

Again, from today's Telegraph:

Time: 12.47 The boss of one of the charities pulling its non-essential staff out mentioned earlier believes "thousands" could die, he tells the WSJ.

"This is a growing crisis of proportions that will cost, we think, thousands of lives and maybe more," said Bruce Johnson, president of SIM USA.

"The international community has the resources and people to respond, but they need to respond."

The newspaper reported "SIM will evacuate about 60 to 70 spouses, children and other non-medical staff in the next few days, Mr. Johnson said".

Hope that these family members are quarantined on their arrival where ever that might be.

A total of seven people joined this ping list yesterday. That's an all time record.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

This particular strain is on a different branch of the family tree of e. zaire. I wonder if it’s more transmissible somehow.

I just hope these evacuees take appropriate precautions and don’t bring it back to the West with them...
