DATING ETIQUETTE
Campus Report ^ | August 2014 | Deborah Lambert

Posted on 07/31/2014 10:09:24 AM PDT by Academiadotorg

Kerry Cronin, who teaches a philosophy class at Boston College, was shocked some years ago during a class on student hookup culture, when a student inquired, “How would you ask someone on a date?”

“It’s easy to hook up with someone you’ve just met in a dark room after having a few drinks,” said freshman Frank DiMartino, who took the class. “But asking someone out on a date in broad daylight, when you actually have to know their name, can be really scary.”

Other schools are apparently taking notice of the need to explain the socialization/dating procedure, according to The Boston Globe. At Duke University, the Counseling and Psychological Services office runs a series called “How to Be in Love,” which also “helps students, recognize “toxic romance” and analyze their break-ups.” And in a “weekly spring workshop, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign included sessions on ‘being single and ready to mingle’ and ‘uncovering the dating scene,’among other topics.”

Yep. Wife and I have been together for 24 years, before we got married we mostly hung out and talked and read and enjoyed each other’s company during normal life stuff. And then we got the same last name and now we hang out and talk and read and enjoy each other’s company during normal life stuff. I “dated” the previous girlfriend, nothing but uncomfortable clothes, pretending to be somebody I’m not, and hoping dinner doesn’t make me fart; then when we took the “next step” we found out neither was the person we thought they were.

“You Americans are so naive. Like when you break up with a girl, it’s a big deal. In my country when a man wants out of a relationship, he goes to the young lady and says, “I break with thee, I break with thee, I break with thee” — and then he throws dog poop on her shoes.” - Steve Martin

“The biggest thing to know about asking somebody out on a date is that it’s no big deal. Really worst case scenario is they say no, not much of an impact. If they say no in a way that’s mean or rude that’s actually a good thing, you’ll be better off without them.”

I was almost paralyzed with fear before asking a girl out when I was in high school, even if her best friend had already told me she would say yes.

“Second biggest thing to know is that dating actually kind of sucks.”

I really enjoyed dating when I was a teenager, except for the initial fear of being turned down for that first date. I did not enjoy dating as an adult, in the “re-entry” market, however.

I was afraid of it in my youth. It’s really in retrospective that I realize it was dumb and a little bit of rejection just isn’t a big deal. Of course then it was made worse once I found out just how uncomfortable I was in a dating environment, suddenly then rejection wasn’t the worst thing that could happen.

I’d hate to be back on the market again, but at least I’d know my goal: no dates, only women whose idea of a good time is finding someplace to kick back and chat for 3 or 4 hours.

At first, I thought this was satire. Sad state of affairs we have.

Our culture has been destroyed. The things that made America great have been systematically taken apart.

“I could have used this class, my social skills with the babes were beyond lousy”.
I see you made it through OK without some lib class explaining it to you.
The human race seemed to propogate for a long time without this crap. It used to be called “growing up”.

The money quote.

Interesting note: The song “I got a brand new girlfriend” was out about the time my wife and I were getting married. She is from an airline family and eventually ended up at Alaska Airlines (which is where the picture of the three of us my wife, me and Sarah Palin) was taken.

We used to fly down to burbank “for the weekend” on a fairly regular basis. Always made me think of that song.

Why weren’t they taught this in middle school?

My God, today’s young adults have been deliberately socially retarded.

If they don’t know stuff at 20 that they should have learned at 14 no wonder they’re still living at home at 30.

Today a “date” means meaningless unattached sex

Simple solution: ask her out via a text message. No verbal communication required.

Social media sux, especially Facebook:
