Is the Internal Revenue Service a threat to religious liberty?
As the IRS continues to come under well-aimed fire for harassing conservative groups, on Friday it secured a final court order formalizing what amounts to a secret agreement to monitor the pulpits of ill-favored churches. The serious danger, as former Justice Department attorney J. Christian Adams told Fox News, is that the IRS will start treating theology as politics, and regulate it accordingly.
Lovers of liberty should be very concerned.
According to a June 27 IRS letter to the Justice Department, 99 churches merit high priority examination for allegedly illegal electioneering activities. The letter was sent in reference to a now-dismissed lawsuit filed by the atheist group known as the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF). The suit originally was a rather broad one, demanding not only that the IRS enforce prohibitions against churches endorsing candidates specifically, but also that churches should be required to file what it described as detailed annual information that would force them (if they are like other nonprofits) to expend substantial time and resources.
With the end of the suit, those filings presumably will not be required (though a second suit, on just that subject, remains open). But IRSs monitoring of alleged electioneering activities could still be quite onerous.
Traditionally, churches have been free to do just about anything short of outright candidate endorsements. Conservatives have suggested that not even that prohibition is enforced against traditionally liberal churches in black communities and that FFRF isnt much concerned with such groups. But at least for conservative-leaning churches, FFRF has a much more restrictive agenda in mind.

I’ll bet that none of them are black churches where politicians regularly campaign from the pulpit.
If one could get a list of the 99 churches, I’d bet that at least 98 of them are preaching a very pure version of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I’ll bet the Rev Jim Wright’s church (americas chickens are coming home to roost)
is not on that list.
The IRS needs to be disassembled, its a dangerious political organization now.
Treat FFRF as the tax shelter scam it has always been.
No problem, we will just call the ACLU. *cough*
More sue and settle.
Or in a FEMA camp.
Or in a FEMA camp.
Gee,...I guess we don’t need to pay the IRS anymore since all of our paper reserve notes and minted coins have “In GOD” We Trust” printed/minted on them.
EXACTLY!!
Atheists are a threat to our liberty.
Wow just think of all the Black churches that preach democrat liberalism from the pulpit. And they are going to get it from the IRS. sarc
Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Seattle (mostly black congregation) has been known to be proudly and actively political (Democrat, of course) for years. It will NOT be investigated, I guarantee. But any church delivering an anti-gay marriage or anti-abortion or anti-Obama sermon will be vulnerable.
The churches might be using freedom of speech!
It sounds like the IRS wants to end that
Such as this:
They will never go after churches that openly support 0bama. Their free pass will never end.
They will go after any church that speaks out about certain privileged minorities, and abortion.
This was predictable. The moment 0 was elected, any reasonable person could have foreseen this. He is a Jew/Christian hating atheist, with a special love for a middle eastern cult. He hates free enterprise and wants to take money from earners and give it to slackers.
The IRS went after Jews and Christians... anyone know if they went after Muslims? I suspect they didn’t...
