BERLINGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday called on Moscow to respond to reports that tanks and troops had crossed from Russia into eastern Ukraine in support of separatist rebels there.
Ms. Merkel discussed the reports and their confirmation by separatist leaders in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Saturday, Steffen Seibert, Ms. Merkel's spokesman said in a statement.
The comments came as the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia were set to meet in Berlin on Sunday in a renewed attempt by Berlin to engineer a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
"The Chancellor said she expected the Russian government to comment on these reports and the statements of the separatists," Mr. Seibert said.

Or what?
Send a sternly worded email?
Well, let’s see...who owns most of the natural gas?
Arm the Ukrainians, perhaps.
But what bi-dent didn’t say was obamma supports putiies cause..
I tend to believe you, but then why do some FReepers support Putin, eh?
Yeah, well, I expect the Grand Kenyan to climb out of his golf cart and act like he cares, but which do you think will happen first?
Don’t know...
Oh yes, stern warnings from Merkel and Obummer will stop Putin in his tracks! /S
Because Freepers admire a strong leader?
Since obama can’t lead, she will lead the free world.
Merkel can NOT lead. Her military is puny compared to Russia, China, USA, India, N. Korea, UK and even France.
Oh for damn sake, Biden go back to sleep you ars.
Lots of leaders are strong. Genghis Khan was strong. Some of the Caesars were strong. What matters is not strength alone. A leader who is not principled and who is self serving is not a leader to be admired. A leader whose propaganda machine is anti-American is not one for conservatives to admire. A leader who was in the KGB for seventeen years and reached the grade of Colonel is not someone to be admired. A leader who supply arms to nitwits who shoot down unarmed civilian planes killing nearly 300 people is not to be admired. A leader who provokes confrontations with his neighbors is not one to be admired. A leader who has his political opponents killed is not one to be admired. I say anyone who admires Putin is either ignorant or indifferent to the values Americans hold sacred.

“I tend to believe you, but then why do some FReepers support Putin, eh?”
They like men who go around bare chested. I’m just saying. . .
FReepers don’t admire our murderous tyrannical foreign enemies. People who admire Putin aren’t Freepers. They’re scum.
Shirtless. Putin on a Ritz.
Whenever anyone says anything positive about Putin, there is a cadre of posters who will be quick with the 'Putin catamite' insults.
That said, I will venture some comments.
It is unfortunate what happened to the Malaysian passenger airliner. The Russian backed rebels screwed up. It Is unfortunate that we took down that Iranian passenger airliner in the Gulf of Hormuz. We screwed up. The Iranians were talking 'smack' like usual, and we mistook the passenger plane for an attack. Bad stuff happens near war zones.
Russia is not going to give up Crimea. That was never in the cards.
Putin at least says some positive things about Christianity. Whether he believes them or not, I have some doubts, but show me one other leader in the West that will actually mutter some positive words about Christianity.
Putin stands up against open Sodomites. Show me one other leader in the West who is not bending over to praise this abominable plague. Uganda maybe, but no European or American leaders.
And yes, I believe Russia supported the 'good' (or at least, 'better') guys in Libya and Syria. Our Government, on the other hand, seems to have some love affair with the Muslim Brotherhood.
So sure, Putin may be a Capital A-Hole, with nefarious designs - but yes, I have no problem praising him for various actions.
