California Trees Nailed As The Source Of Mystery Infections
© 2014 NPR ^ | August 22, 2014 3:32 PM ET | by NANCY SHUTE

A fungus called Cryptococcus gattii can cause life-threatening infections, especially in people with compromised immune systems. One-third of AIDS-related deaths are thought to be caused by the fungus.

But though people in Southern California have been getting sick from C. gatti for years, nobody knew how....

C. gattii from three trees, Canary Island pine, New Zealand pohutukawa and American sweet gum, matched almost exactly with C. gattii from infected patients. And the tree samples matched not just those from recent patients but from people who were sick 10 to 12 years ago. Thus this strain of C. gattii has been causing health problems in California for at least that long.

The results were published Thursday in PLOS Pathogens.

People living or traveling in California should be aware of the risk of cryptococcosis from C. gattii, Springer tells Shots, especially if they have HIV/AIDS, cancer, or other illnesses that can suppress the immune system. "When you travel and you're exposed to these reservoirs, you have the potential to be vulnerable to these infections."

"KILL ALL THE TREES IN CALIFORNIA! The sooner the better!!!"

The sodomites are in complete control of this country, from the presidency down to your local school districts, so if they want not only these trees but any or all trees destroyed, they will get it.

Miserable trees with that “fruit” that drops. They are all over GA and apparently all of the south. You can easily break a leg, foot or ankle by stepping on one of the “bombs” that drop. Your feet just roll out from under you. They’re dreadful.
****************************************************************************************
They are miserable trees for placement in a yard. We had one and soon learned about the nasty seed pods (the kids call them “monkey balls”) that drop every year and ruin your “barefoot” lawn.

A couple of years ago I finally had enough with cleaning up monkey balls and committed justifiable “treeacide”.

Here’s a picture for your viewing pleasure:

There’s a neighborhood in Virginia that was built in the 70’s and the developer made it a rule that trees were never to be cut down unless rubbing up against a house

What neighborhood is that?

Tell me about it, I have two walnut trees on my property.

Time for Obama to release an executive order to quarantine those trees.

Well the folks in Georgia may well call this sweet gum but in the SF Bay Area the tree is known as liquid amber and those pods can ruin a nice day of bare footedness

And sorry about my misspelling (I spelled it as it sounds) the official spelling is

“Liquidambar styraciflua”

It is the same tree and they are all over mid to northern California

I cut every sweet gum I can. The gum balls are a pain in the mower and dislodge my serpentine belts on the belly of the mower more times than I can count. So now I know I’m also practicing disease prevention when I cut the suckers down!
