Woke us up in Danville but I did not think it was a big deal. Of course, we were some distance from the epicenter

Damage in Napa City and Napa County could exceed 1 Billion $’s.

Reality is hitting now as people who were euphoric, re surviving are now finding out they were not insured or their job is in danger of not being there due to severe damage to the work places.

The Salvation Army as usual did its great job. They had one of their food trucks at the mobile home park feeding people by 9 am. They brought in 4 more trucks from other areas.

Besides our normal donations to the Salvation Army and 3 generations of bell ringers, we go to the local site and check with the cook and head people re what food they need for the next meal during holidays and times like this.

This time, they needed breakfast items to feed the regulars and those who had been using the emergency food trucks. We went to Walmart and loaded up on bacon, sausages and other breakfast items, bought them and dropped them off at the local SA headquarters. Vendors and other people had brought in eggs, bread and bottled water to handle some immediate needs.

I have suggested to friends/relatives, who would like to help to:

1. Donate to the Napa Salvation Army via the internet.

2. Buy an extra bottle or two of Napa Wine. So much of the economy and employment is dependent on the wine industry. The wine industry has pledged at least $10 million to help locals and local businesses to get back on their feet.

3. If you like to come to Napa, please come on up. Most of the good/great restaurants are now open. Again, buy some Napa wine from the wine shops that have been hit so hard.

Thanks!

Thank you.

I have a client who sells Barrels and a few winery tools to the wineries. The economic ripples from this earthquake are a lot deeper than has been reported.

If I lived in CA, I would have moved years ago....earthquakes are just the tip of the economic iceburg growing there.
Thanks to Gov Brown.

“It looked like lightning flashes high up into the sky, flickering and pulsating. I thought the earthquake was producing lightning. Other strange thoughts of nukes going off ( just for a split second).”

I saw the green lights this time and the other big one about 15 years ago and the quote minor one earlier this year. The first time, several of my family members kidded me until other family members, neighbors and friends who saw the green flashes confirmed what I saw.

Apparently, about 10-15% of us see these green lights during the severe earthquakes.

The theory is as the ground rolls through and across the land, away from the epicenter, that movement creates a lot of static electricity. Then, the electricity escapes and causes the green flashes that a few of us see.

In the big one about 15 years ago, a couple of pilots were in a helicopter and saw the earth moving like waves in the ocean. One of the pilots saw the green flashes and the other didn’t.

ALl too well I remember the Loma Prieta Quake back in 1989!

For all the world it felt as though the ground had Liquified under me....

in tetrospect very real likelihood that a great deal of static electricity would naturally occur aa “side product” of the massive amount of friction of an earthquake

“There are videos of dogs showing erratic behavior and racing out of a room seconds before a quake hits. What are they reacting to?”

Decades ago when we lived in Marin and Sacramento, we had a hundred pound dog, who was normally fearless. About 10 minutes before a quake would hit, she would scratch on the doors and whine until we let her in. She and I became one until the quake was over.

We live on the edge here, with city on one side and woods on the other side. About 10-15 minutes before every quake over 3.0, the critters from foxes, coyotes, bobcats, coons, possums and deer start running into things in our yard and outside our yard. One area just outside our master bedroom, becomes an I5 for for critters heading south until this last quake which was south of us. During this quake, they ran north, away from the quake. We have a deer fence around a good part of our yard which keeps critters out and herds them around the house. There was a lot of fresh organic fertilizer, hoof prints and paw prints heading north along and outside the deer fence.

About 10 minutes before this quake, we heard something slam against/on our deck which is inside the deer fence. Then, the noise of critters scurrying/running past our master bedroom windows and outside our deer fence, began. At that time, the sounds seemed to be heading south, the normal pattern before a quake.

My wife had gone back to sleep, until she heard the critter noises and me getting out of bed to check. Then, she said maybe you should come back to bed. As I started to get back into bed, I saw the green lights flash. Then, I covered her body with mine, the harsh shaking began, my wife used her favorite 4 letter word, used only in situations like this. Then, the power went out for about 4 hours.

During the quake and right after it, we heard things falling around our home and in it. A few things were broken and basically every book and picture was thrown off its resting place to the floor. Most items hit carpet or rugs and were undamaged. Then, critter noises indicated they were running north away from the quake as noted above.

My OCD wife started to jump out of bed. I told her to get her UGHs on and to grab a flashlight. I got my Crocks on, and as we went around the house it looked littered, and there was a lot of broken glass in our dining room, not the orderly home with a life long OCDer. I told her to ignore her OCD and go back to bed until day light or the power came back on. I went back to sleep, and she laid there fretting about a littered house.

Outside some tools and stuff were on the deck and ground. We have a recycling water fountain and the heavy top parts were thrown about 5’ away. They were broken, and our yard man got them back on and the fountain working.

Our home was safe probably due to some expensive renovating finished a couple of weeks ago.

Very interesting I still can't believe other people did not see the flashing. My wife said she saw no flash. The room lit up, so it seemed hard not to see it. This light was pulsating on and off brightly from east to west. I assumed it to be sub stations, but friends asked how sub stations would put off flashes like that. Thanks for the info. Started to doubt my eyes.

I don't get the Shaky Side, Grampa. Down in Santa Monica a 6? Perhaps some cause for a brief pause in the cocktail hour. a 5? Please don't wake me.

The '94 was for real, OK. But that was a pretty high Richter Number, 7+, IIRC. No matter the Richter # in Napa, I am very relieved that so few were hurt, and that there was so little immediate catastrophic damage. I did lose a house in 94, but it took a long time for the ground to open up underneath it causing it to be condemned. At first it looked like no damage at all!

In this county, there is a lot alluvial soil, and even a high 5 can cause damage in those areas.

Each day, we are ending up with more red tagged homes, businesses and stores.

Another factor, last week was a big vacation week, and a lot of people were out of town and didn’t start returning until this past weekend with more yesterday and today. We had a few couples like this at church yesterday. They returned Saturday or early yesterday, and really have no idea what their homes were/are like or the condition. Two couples are staying at friends or relatives until they sort out the damage to their homes.

Basically every grocery store and department store in town had merchandise on the floors, displays broken and other stuff shook down.

Ornamental/décor like towers and similar stuff even on new buildings often got separated somewhat from the main building, which resulted in red tags on the building.

Older Wineries often looked like they had been vandalized with barrel and most bottles strewn on the floors with wine flowing everywhere.

Quite a “wildlife alarm” system you have there! Good to hear you didn’t suffer injury or major damage in the quake.

My wild life alarm group went off again last week.

About 5 minutes later we had a severe jolt/aftershock.

Typical California liberals want to spent a ton of money to get a ten second warning before an earthquake.

One of our friends, a young conservative, told us we had our wild critter alarms, and she had her dog. Her dog started trying to get into bed with them about 10 minutes before the quake. Then about a minute before, the dog tried to pull them out of bed, and the dog started barking at them at the same time.

Her suggestion, “If you don’t have wild critters, adopt a dog.”

Re the flashing green lights. We went to a party last night.

There were about 50 people at the party, and of course all of us told our personal stories. I asked everyone I talked to, basically everyone there, if they saw the flashing green lights.

5 of us saw the lights. By now the other 90% of un seeing people, don’t argue with us. They know we saw the lights.
