West Africa: Ebola Hits Healthcare Workers, Overwhelms Responders in Liberia
All Africa ^ | 10/10/14 | All Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) says in its latest Ebola report that those dealing with the outbreak in Liberia are so overwhelmed that they cannot keep reliable statistics on its spread. The report also says the high rate of infections across the three countries where it is worst is a cause of "great concern".

The report, for the week ended October 5, says the death toll was 3,879 at that date, with 8,033 cases having been reported in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and the United States. Another case had since been reported in Spain.

"The situation in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone continues to deteriorate," the report says, "with widespread and persistent transmission of EVD (Ebola virus disease)... There is no evidence that the EVD epidemic in West Africa is being brought under control, though there is evidence of a decline in incidence in the districts of Lofa in Liberia, and Kailahun and Kenema in Sierra Leone."

Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone continues to show an "upward epidemic trend," WHO says, and transmission in those countries is "widespread and intense".

They say there are 8,033 cases in several countries including the U.S. I doubt they’re only counting 2 here. I believe there are many more.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

Wonder what is going on with Duncan’s family? And he had to have contact with many people others before he was finally isolated in the hospital.

Duncan’s family just did day 14 after possible infection, so they should show symptoms by now (Duncan did before day 10). Without those symptoms showing up we can assume they didn’t get infected.

Personally I believe we’re asking for big trouble by sending in thousands of airborne unit combat troops to a country known as Liberia. Which according to some functionary appointed by “Obama The Magnificent Incompetent” are being sent there to help construct infastructure for a series of Ebola health clinics.

Liberia is a country created by former American slaves who’s capital,Monrovia,is named after an American President James Monroe. According to a report I heard from a local conservative talk show host which I could be wrong,(and truly hope so) reported. “The city has only 7 or 9 public toilets, and a mere 26 miles of fresh water piping.”

Right now the country has just gotten through a bitter civil war and seems to be the current epicenter of the Ebola outbreak that btw started after an infestation of caterpillars. I mention that because Sierra Leone where the epidemic originated from had the same experience.

Here is some of the other krap that is going on there;

grave digger strike

election canceled

doctors strike

malaria
While it’s obvious we gave this effort by former enslaved American citizens to return to the continent they were taken from meger attention and support following its creation than what should been given.

Under present circumstances we should be circumspective of the assistance we offer. Certainly sending combat units not equipted with the knowledge, training, or backgound to do what is needed. Placing them in harms way in an area where the likelyhood of contracting a deadly disease is pre eminent simply because it suits political symbolism is madness.

I want to stay calm but it is hard to imagine how there could possibly NOT be many more. I think you are going to experience one of the worst things imaginable, being proven RIGHT when you WANT to be WRONG. It is often much worse than being proven wrong when you want to be right.

Yes, the less we hear about Duncan’s family, the more suspicious it gets. Better would be updates on their condition. What would be a more interesting news story? There is a reason this is being suppressed. Hopefully a real journalist in the UK will get to the bottom of it because America’s news is just the King’s Mouthpiece.

I read the same report here on FRee Republic.
Also , this is currently part of their "rainey season" .
Since the virus can live longer in heat and humidity , you have to wonder how safe is the water supply ,
or even waste water treatment to prevent further infection.

It is about 700 from the 101st, which isn’t really an
Airborne unit, it is Airmobile.

The 101st soldiers are going to be the Headquarters element

The 101st will supply 700 soldiers to what will be 3 to 4 thousand, they are half of the first 1400, (the other 700 being mostly engineers).

“About 300 of the troops from the 101st Airborne will come from the division headquarters, and they will serve as the Joint Force Command for the mission.”

“A 101st Airborne press release issued Tuesday evening stated the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Headquarters, Fort Campbell, will deploy as the Joint Force Command for Operation United Assistance in Monrovia, Liberia.
“Operation United Assistance is a critical mission,” said Maj. Gen. Gary J. Volesky, commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). “We will coordinate all of the Department of Defense resources in Liberia to support USAID and the government of Liberia to contain the Ebola virus and ultimately save lives.”

I do not think our troops’ duties include messing in rare virus control in very poorly set up places. I fear we are sending them to their doom, and maybe to the doom of their families when they return. And for nothing.

Let the researchers and aid workers and humanitarians work on this problem because this is what they do.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ebola-spreads-in-nigeria-2-new-cases-unconnected-to-patrick-sawyer/

This story recounts how a slum area in Nigeria was blocked off and how looters took off with infected linen to spread amongst others.

Also:

ABUJA, Nigeria — Two alarming new cases of Ebola have emerged in Nigeria, widening the circle of people sickened beyond the immediate group of caregivers who treated a dying airline passenger in one of Africa’s largest cities.

The two new cases were infected by their spouses, both medical workers who had direct contact with Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, who flew into Nigeria from Liberia and Togo and infected 11 others before he died in July. The male and female caregivers also then died of Ebola, Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said Friday.”

Patrick Sawyer was a naturalized American from Liberia who brought ebola from Nigeria after taking care of his stricken sister.

CCTV shows he must have known that he was infected because he was avoiding contact with others and is seen writhing on the terminal floor.

The doctor who treated him then became infected:

It's criminally irresponsible, IMO. The troops are not trained for this mission, and they're doing nothing that the West Africans couldn't do for themselves.

Saw the CDC Director, Tom Frieden, on the news tonight explaining the 1st in-country infection was a nurse that took care of Duncan. Doc Tommy promptly blamed a “breach of protocol” (the nurse’s fault) for the infection although she was fully masked, gloved, and gowned. Sound familiar? Nurse who did the initial screening of Duncan was immediately blamed for the “incomplete communication of Duncan’s disease” to the treatment team. Then it was the team’s fault, then it was a software glitch, and finally it was dropped with some mumbling about everyone needing more training.

The strains of Ebola are significantly more dangerous and infectious than the CDC, WHO, and the rest are leading us to believe.

The looted slum area, West Point, was in Monrovia Liberia.

There were no looted slums in Nigeria.

The cases in Nigeria were directly related to contact with Patrick Sawyer. Either primary, or secondary.

There have been no new ebola cases in Nigeria in over a month.

How do you figure that the troops we are sending are not trained and capable of performing their duties there?

Do you really think that the Seabees can't build, that the engineers can't build, that the headquarters element from the 101st can't run a headquarters, that the lab techs can't do their lab work, that the supply and logistics people can't do supply and logistics, that the aviation people can't do aviation?
