David Petraeus: ‘People Saw ISIS Coming’
The Blaze ^ | 10/22/2014 | Madeleine Morgenstern

Former CIA Director David Petraeus said in a new interview that the rise of the Islamic State was “well known” among people monitoring the situation within the U.S. government, and that it was able to flourish amid the chaos of the civil war in Syria.

“ISIS in a sense is the evolution of an organization that we did defeat, Al Qaeda in Iraq,” Petraeus told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an interview published Monday. “Some of the very hard work we did to help re-establish the fabric of Iraqi society — to bring the Sunni Arabs back into Iraqi society and give them an incentive to support the new Iraq rather than to oppose it — was undone. It created fertile ground once again for the planting of the seeds of extremism and alienated the Sunni Arab component of Iraqi society.

Where’s Reince Priebus? Republicans should use this quote and run with it.

He’s anti-First Amendment too, he made a point of going after the preacher in Florida who wanted to burn the Koran.

“Saw ISIS coming” ha! Petraeus was coordinating arms shipments to “Syrian rebels” since at least 2012 when he was director of CIA.

I agree with you.

“ISIS in a sense is the evolution of an organization that we did defeat, Al Qaeda in Iraq,”

Doesn't sound like they defeated anyone..."

Petraeus is such a political tool. Looks like he’s dancing to Hillary!’s tune now.

He is a smooth talker and envisioned himself as the 21st century Alexander the Great. I love listening to him. But the press doesn’t always reveal a person’s ideology in total.

In addition to the link below, I have always hated, hated, his COIN rules of engagement that resulted in many ally deaths and the loss of friend’s sons.

We started ISIS in its modern configuration by two acts:

1) we freed the man who would become its leader from our custody in 2009.

2) we armed it from the stocks of Libyan weaponry, shipping it through Turkey to Syria. This is what is behind Chris Stevens and Benghazi.

3) the hasty ill-fated withdrawal from Iraq by Obama allowed Al Qaeda in Iraq to be re-constituted.

By these acts, we breathed new life into the old Al Qaeda in Iraq, and allowed the new entity of ISIS to emerge as a regional army.

“Poor Mrs. Petraeus was nationally humiliated.”

Poor Mrs Petraeus took a $200,000 a year job with the Obama admin. It bought her husband's silence all this time. I don't feel sorry for her or him.

Hillary probably offered both of them something better than Obama.

Thanks for posting your excellent summary of Iraq before Obozo and and after Obozo.

“Some of the very hard work we did to help re-establish the fabric of Iraqi society — to bring the Sunni Arabs back into Iraqi society and give them an incentive to support the new Iraq rather than to oppose it — was undone.”

That’s actually a pretty interesting statement. That’s about as close as a political creature such as Petraeus can get to naming names without winding up in Fort Marcy Park with an unexplained bullet to the head, and it turns out he really doesn’t have to. Undone, indeed; yes, it was, and by whom?

Let us review. When 0bama took office (1) the war in Iraq was over, (2) there was a new, popularly-elected government, (3) al Qaeda in Iraq was in hiding or dead, and (4) we had combat troops sufficient to the need staged in existing bases. Six years later, (1) the war is back on, (2) the Iraqi government has denied a SOFA and managed to devolve to tribal irrelevance, (3) al Qaeda in Iraq lives again in the form of ISIS, and (4) we’re scrambling to throw an inadequate number of troops into a war zone with impossible ROE and the pretense that they’re going to do security at the embassy, which incidentally was just the recipient of a mortar attack.

If that is not a thoroughly damning litany of failure I cannot imagine what would make it worse short of complete abandonment of the embassy staff under fire, and we know from Benghazi just how very capable the current administration is of doing precisely that. Pray for the troops.

I think you were right the first time “Sinnis” or sinners, either way the lying, murdering, cheating, bunch of no good government perverts who send our money, weapons, and guns to our enemies to fight at a later date.....chaos unlimited since the 7th century.

ISIS/ISIL are too very different things. ISIS is a violent group of jhadists who want to be ISIL. ISIL is the creation of several middle east nations, who will be the caliphate to welcome the Muslim messiah they believe will come.

Does the coward have the guts to say that we should not have pulled out of IraQ?

We have no one in our military that is even half the person a Patton or Grant or Lee or Omar Bradley etc. All gutless wonders.
