In 1976, Los Angeles was conservative. People forget that was Reagan country. Now it is a cesspool.But Boston has been a left wing cesspool, since I can remember.

Menino was only three years younger than his predecessor Ray Flynn, but what a difference! Flynn was an old-fashioned socially conservative Catholic Democrat. A neighborhood guy who came out of the South Boston of the Forties and Fifties, Raymond Flynn was pro-life, anti-busing, and friendly with Reagan, and supported Romney in the last election.

Menino took office in 1993 barely formed as a political actor, and fit easily into the post-Sixties Democratic Party. He had little trouble with the affluent liberal yuppie, gay, and feminist blocs that earlier ethnic Democrats had struggled with, and he managed that without losing Irish or Italian or African-American support. Menino was a symbol of how much Democratic politicians, especially big city White ethnic Catholic Democrat politicians had changed in just ten or fifteen years.

A generation earlier, Menino, who didn't have much education and struggled with the English language would have been hated by ambitious young progressive types, as Daley or Rizzo or Yorty was, but Menino got along well with upscale liberals. In fact, he never really faced serious opposition from anybody. He was a hard guy to hate, even if you disagreed with him about almost everything. Dumb as a fox, you could say.
