South Dakota's suddenly tight Senate race is suddenly not so tight again, according to the polls. Still, none of the four candidates has majority support.
Polls released in recent days show Republican Mike Rounds with bigger leads than in the previous round of polling.
A KELO/Sioux Falls Argus Leader poll conducted Oct. 20-23 showed Rounds with 42 percent support; Democrat Rick Weiland at 33 percent; independent Larry Pressler at 13 percent; and independent Gordon Howie at 2 percent. Another 10 percent of respondents were undecided.
An NBC News/Marist poll conducted Oct. 19-23 showed Rounds at 43 percent, Weiland at 29 percent, Pressler at 16 percent, Howie at 3 percent and 7 percent undecided.
Previous polls conducted in early October showed Rounds with a lead as small as 4 percentage points. In June, a poll indicated he was leading by 15 points.
The candidate with the most votes Nov. 4, majority or not, will win the Senate seat now held by U.S Sen. Tim Johnson, a Democrat, who is retiring.
Weiland attacks own party
In a statement released Monday, Weiland accused the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee of backing Pressler.
"Everybody knows the ugly attack ads you have been running against Mike Rounds help Larry Pressler, not the candidate of the party you are supposed to be campaigning for," Weiland said. "They make me, as the Democratic candidate, look like a dirty campaigner. They damage Governor Rounds. And they let former Senator Pressler stand on the sidelines looking clean and gathering votes from disgusted South Dakotans, just as you intended them to do."
An AP story quotes Weiland as saying, "I believe their calculation was Larry Pressler had a better chance of winning than I did."

Mike Rounds will win, but he’s turned out to be a dud of a candidate. Don’t be surprised if he turns out to be a one-term Senator.
Fortunately SD isn’t lacking for a farm team of Republicans.
Weiland has only one option left to stick it to Hairy Reid, cut an ad endorsing Rounds!
why is Pressler running?
Pressler seems to have moved to the left over the years. If I’m not mistaken, he endorsed Obama in 2008.

“why is Pressler running?”
To do his good bud, Barac, a solid.
Wow! And was not there just a false charge leveled at Rounds? He is ahead big time.
I wish Kristi Noem were running instead of Rounds. It would be great to get a few more GOP rising women stars in DC. We should get at least two more women - Ernst and Capito. Land seems to be fading in MI.
Yeah, I’d have preferred Noem as well. I presume she’ll be succeeding Thune, unless she wants to go for a leadership role in the House (or if something forces Rounds to step down early from his Senate seat).
Pressler seems to have moved to the left over the years. If Im not mistaken, he endorsed Obama in 2008.

Big-time! He is multiple times more liberal than the Dem candidate. He has become a wild-eyed liberal nut-case. And yes; Pressler loves Obama.
It’s a good thing the rats didn’t pull a Kansas or Alaska, Pressler could have had a chance.
But Weiland isn’t a desultory piece of garbage candidate like the former RAT Senate nominee in Kansas or the former RAT Gov nominee in Alaska, so he wasn’t about to entertain dropping out. Weiland will place 2nd and Pressler 3rd.
800,000 people .... 2 senators.
GOP should organize and ID each and every person in the state that ever votes GOP. I think the DEMs are more thorough ... which ONE CD states do we lose SEnators that we should win?
Tester’s seat in MT should be GOP and Heidi Heitkamp needs to go. NO excuse in places like that.
Good idea Pete.
The Dakotas have been very naughty. I still can’t believe Heidi! Heitc**t won/stole North Dakota in 2012, until 2010 it had an all rat delegation since 1986. SD turned out Pressler in 1996 of all years.
And friggin Montana, Daines will be the FIRST Republican popularly elected to that seat.
Alaska has sent RINOs, until 2008 when phony charges sunk Ted Stevens.
